MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.
KUMARA SITTINGS. The Board sat at Kumara on Thursday when the appeal of James Murpny (Mr Joyce) under section 35 (also drawn in' ballot) was the first caso heard.
After hearing the evidence of appellant and his father, the chairman said this was rather a difficult case to deal with. Appellant had many businesses to look after. The sluicing claim and mill could be run by partners; the hotel by the father and sister; for tho run the rent was not-much and tho sacrifice would not be much. Two brothers had been called up under section 35. One had been exempted by the Minister. No man is indispensable to any business. The appeal would ho adjourned for three months to see what arrangements could bo made by tho appellant, the Board being of the opinion that appellant could be replaced. APPEALS UNDER SECTION 35 Tho following appeals under Family Section 35 were dealt with:
Emil T. Burger.—Adjourned for om* month for medical examination.
Edward Foley.—Appeal allowed, not coming under the section.
David, John. George, and Jam»*» Lawrence, brothers. —The appeals of John- and James were allowed on tho ground of being over ago. David’s appeal was adjourned for one mouth to allow of medical examination, and that of George (also drawn in ballot) was likewise adjourned for medical examination.
Henry John Johnsen’s appeal was allowed, as lie was within the section. William and James Murtha (brothers). Adjourned for one month for medical examination/
John Bapiste Mazoni (also in tne ballot). —Adjourned pending the hearing of <the appeal of his brother at Reef ton.
John Nolan’s appeal was allowed. Tho appeal of his brother William (also in the ballot) was disallowed. John Gammell Richie and Robert James Richie. Both appeals were allowed, as he was not within the secsection, and the latter under age.
Walter Rowe and William Rowe (both also in the ballot). —The formers appeal was allowed, and that of tne latter (William) adjourned sine die.
William Joseph Treacy and Augustus John Joseph Treacy. —The appeal of William Joseph was allowed and that of Augustus, who did not appear, was disallowed.
The appeal of F. Raymond was adjourned sine die^
THE GREYMOUTH SITTING'S. THIRD DAY.
The Board resumed its Greymoutli sittings yesterday, when the following appeals were dealt with: Duncan B. McLaren, marine (engineer, s.s. Ngatoro^.appealed on the ground of being over age. On production of certificate, the appeal was allowed. Charles Rugg, Jimr., (Mr J. Hannan), 25 years of age, only son, applied for extension, of time. Appellant was allowed one month, plus a probable fourteen days’ military leave.
Henry Albert Wheeler, farmer, Itotomanu (Mr J. Hannan) gave evidence on behalf of his son’s appeal. Captain Colclougli said appellant was classed as C2 (home service). ' The Board adjourned the application sine die.
John Batty, farmer, withdrew liis appeal.—Appeal dismissed. William Mclntyre, surfaceman, Westland railways.—Appellant said he had an aged mother and sister (the former being in bad health), four brothers, and one brother killed at Gallipoli. . Three brohers were marled, and the fourth, who had elisted three times, was in bad health and had been in consequence discharged from Trent ham. The latter had worked at a sawmill, tailing out, but was at present doing light work for the borough of Brunner, but did not help keep the home, which latter responsibility rested on appellant. His mother was in “crook” health.
To the Board: The Railway Department had not appealed on liis behalf. The Chairman said the question for the Board to decide was whether tne remainder of the family could reasonably maintain the members of the famly that appellant had been doing bis tabling. He had been doing his duty to liis mother, but would still be able to contribute out of liis military pay. Appellant would be allowed 14 days to arrange liis affairs, with a probable extra 14 days leave from the military authorities.
Horace Campbell Lusty.—Withdrawn John Flanagan Pfaff.—No appearance ■ dismissed. ilr Hassell, representing the Railway Department, appealed on behalf of M. ■F. F. Gembitzky (stationmaster at liunanga) and Anthony Dalzell (tablet porter, Itewanui). Both appeals «<?ro adjourned sine die. An appeal on behalf of George Wallace Cameron, of Otira Line, was withdrawn by the Department..
Frank Lyons Blackmore, of Greymouth, appealed on the ground of being over ago.—Appeal allowed.
