The revenue received from the Westland section of the New Zealand railways for the period ending December 9th, 1916, was £12,103, compared with £11,914 for the corresponding period of 1915. The death of Mrs J. Dawson of Blackball took place yesteeday at G:ey Hirer Hosp’tal after an illness of about six weeks. Tho deceased, who was a native of England was 55 years of sge, She leaves a grown-up family. Miss P. Smith, daughter of Mr and Mrs E. J. Smith of Greymouth, leaves Wellington tor the Old Country at the end of this month, to be married to Cap tain Norman Shepherd, who was on the staff of the National Bank, Hokitika, when enlisted. Mr B. W. Dalton, British Trade Commissioner, is abmit to tour the South Island for the purpose of meeting business men and discussing British trade affairs. Westland will be included in the tour, and in due course Hokitika will bo visited on a date to be announced subsequently.
To the list of West Coast passes in the recent University examinations must he added the name of Master Eugene G. Lynch, son of Mr. J. D. Lynch, who passed the matriculation and medical preliminary examinations. Master Lynch, who is a pupil of tlie Wellington College, sat for his examination in Wellington. The death took place at the Westland Hospital at 2.30 a.m. this morning of William Joseph McTaggart only son of Mrs and Mrs McTaggart of Ross. Deceased was a native of Runanga and aged two years and six months, and was a bright and intelligent lad being very popular with young and old. The funeral will take place at the Greymouth cemetery. Mrs Philip King, of Waiuku, Auckland, has just celebrated her 101st birthday. She arrived m the colony in 1840, before the arrival of Governor Hobson. Her late husband arrived m 1814, when sixteen months old, his father being a member of tho Sev Samuel Marsden’s party. The Grey Trotting Club balance sheet for tho summer meeting showed the total receipts to be £3,381, leaving a net profit of slightly over £4OO. Tin principal expenses were stakes £I6OO and totalisator taxes £BO7 2/3, the latter beiDg made up as follows: —Stake tax £l6, ordinary totalisator tax £424 14/3, dividend tax £366 8/.

J, Ward, Acting Consul for Belgium at Christchurch writes to the County Clerk; — "On behalf of the Belgian Government, 1 desire to thank you and all who assisted in donating the amount, and I will see that same is duly applied to the purpose mentioned ” The two rinks to represent the Hokitika Bowling Club at the West Coast tournament at Beefton, leave on Monday at 10 o’clock. Tiie deceased was a sterling fellow, who had resided in Stafford for a great many years, following mining operations. About a week ago he was brought to Westland Hospital for treifment. Luring the West Coast carnival, states the .New Zealand Timer, a meeting was held at the village or Eokatahi, and things went swimmingly, according to a local sportsman who attended tho function. There wero several exciting incidents during tbe day. At the finhhof the trotting racp, which, by the way, was a very close one, tho judge’s stand broke down and there was general confusion. The judge s,ot rather rattle >, and declared several horsrs to be the winners, but eventually recovered his composure and put the right horse in the right place to the utter satisfaction of the backers and the everlasting glory of tho West Coast.
