IN THE ANTARCTIC.
Where the Aurora is. From the position given by Captain Davis of the Antarctic exploring ship Aurora on Christmas D iy, th« distance to Cape Ad are is 780 miles. This would a low the Aurora to be off Cape Ad&re on about January 3rd. From Cape A dare to McMurdo Sound is about 360 miles. Given fair ice conditions and freedom from blizzards, the Aurora might possibly be in the vicinity of Hot Poiut,
It is interesting to note that the “ long day ” is now being experienced by the Auroras people ; the san not setting at all, but reaching the lowset attitude, about 9 degress above the southern horizon at midnight, Tne sun then riies gradually for twelve hours, until nooi, when it is about 40 degrees above the northern horizon.
Circumstances, which might appear peculiar to people in New Zealand, will be apparent in Antarctica between the 15th and 23cd instants. Between those dates the aun and moon will both be continuously visible. On the Tatter date the new moon will be ODly a few degrees directly under-'' ceath the sun, and the illuminated portion of the motfa’s disc Will appear like an umbrella, its cups pointing downwards.
It is quite possible that the brilliancy of the sun may prevent this being seen on the actual date of new moon, but it should bo seen the day following.
