Tlie Greymoutli Sittings of the above Board .were continued yesterday when the following business was dealt with. COAL MINERS. In connection with the appeal by Isaac James, Manager of the State Coal mines on behalf of a number of behalf of a number of employees, the Chairman stated that the appeals would he granted on the usual condition of notification of any change of employment or address. The Board recognised that the coal industry must he carried out by nien experienced and physically fit, but employers must be impressed with the necessity of keeping these men in the industry. In these cases the Board and the country relied on mine managers not asking for more exemptions than absolutely necessary. The miners’ cases would be adjourned sine die, so as thoywould not automatically revert to the ballot. OTHER. APPEALS. William Patrick Sullivan (Grcymoutli) appealed on tlie ground of being over age.—Appeal allowed.
Alexander Duncan, stock-driver (Mr. J. Hannan), appealed on the grounds of undue hardship and that lie had to support his parents in Canterbury.—Appeal dismissed.
John Sullivan Scott Sawmill hand To Kinga had liis appeal dismissed, but was allowed one month to put his affairs in order.
John Block Sage wharf-labourer, Greyr mouth, appeal adjourned for one month to allow of appellant being medically examined.
IClajudy Anthony Orooby, bushman Karoro. —Adjourned sine-die. Horace Marshall Guy Feary, Dairy Farmer, Kaimata.—Adjourned in order to allow appellant to obtain medical evidence as to the state of his father’s health .
Henry William Ivitchingham (Mr. F. A. Kitcliingham) appealed in behalf of John Saunders, law clerk. This appeal was lodged, in order to allow of his employer replacing him as a responsible clerk. Saunders had failed to pass the Medical Board test, and had been classed for home service. The appellant asked that the appeal be adjourned for two months in order to procure a substitute.
The Chairman said this was hardly a case of “home industries” (Laughter) The appeal would be dismissed. William' A.' Hamilton had his appeal adjourned for two months to allow of some family arrangements being made. Walkin’- 'Joseph, Master-baker Greymouth.—Appeal allowed appellant being over age. . John Joseph Keating (Mr., J. Hannan), mawied 12 months ago, and' 33 years of age, said he had one brother a draper’s assistant in the First Division. The latter had also been drawn in the first ballot and in the event of his brother being chosen for service, his mother would revert to appellant. Apellant managed for Griffen, and Smith, and bought for the Mawliera Store.
After lengthy evidence the Board said no case of hardship had be« made out in the appeal as it lay. Appellant could support his wife out of his pay, and, so far as the management of the fruit shop was concerned, this was a luxury rather than an essential industry. The appeal would-be dismissed and appellant allowed a month to arrange his affairs. Thomas Walter Lord, Blackball carter.—Appeal dismissed. Stewart Hay. Storeman Blackball.— Appeal dismissed. Edward William Weenlnk. Appeal allowed appellant not coming Kvithin Section 35 .
Robert John Rouse—Appeal, dismissed.
Charles Roberts, Engine Driver, Grey mouth—Appeal dismissed. Claude Allen Coombe, Carrier, Greymouth.—Appeal dismissed. 31. Nolan, Produce Merchant, Greymoutli.—Appeal dismissed, aud appellant allowed two months to wind up hisbusiness.
J. 31. 3lc3lasters, Storeman, Brunnertown.—The Chairman after a somewhat lengthy hearing expressed his dissatisfaction at the contradictory and misleading way in which the appellant gave his evidence. It was not impossible that the store could be carried onwithout had not given his mother’s exact financial position. The appeal would be adjourned for one month to allow appellant to go befoie the 3ledieal Board and the appeal would he reheard at the next sitting of the Board for more satisfactory evidence as to the precise financial position of v ap pellant and his family. P. T. C. Priest withdrew his application for extended time, intimating that ho was enlisting and going away with 26th Reinforcements.
