A Huguenot named Fourier was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with : making seditious utterances at a public . meeting at Clyde Quay on Sunday, Jan. 7th. ' Evideneo was given that accused 1 made a violent speech, urging a refusal to obey the military service law. ■ On searching the accused’s house the , police discovered a quantity of carfc- | ridges, anti-conscription manifestations and a number of anarchist phamplots. Accused speaking in his own defence said that the articles found in his house were a legacy from a deceased room mate. He denied that he had any seditious intention. The Magistrate imposed a sentence • of twelve months.

Wheat Scheme. WELLINGTON, Jan 16 The Government’s wheat scheme is practically settled, and the main lines have been cabled to the Hon. W. F. Massey and Sir Joseph Ward to ensure their confirmation. The Hon. W. D. S. 'MacDonald states that the Government is prepared either to Huy outright or guarantee a minimum, which, of course, will be lower than if tho Government took the whole crop from tho farmers.; The position has been made somewhat difficult by the strong criticismof the farmers’ demands causing tlienr now to take up a passive attitude which makes progress in the negotiations slow, but Mr. MacDonald hopes soon to clfoct a satisfactory arrangement. , ■ !■! m II

WELLINGTON, Jan. 18: ' New Regulations were approved by the Elexcutivo Council to-day, enabling leave of absence without pay to bo granted to voluntary recurits on various grounds, relating to immediate service causing undue hardship, and providing that men exempted from service on account of their occupation shall notify the Commandant of any change of occupation, address, etc.
