Sitting at Hokitika- < Wednesday, Jan 17. 1 The Board met at 10 a.m. to hear ] appeals against military service. Pre- \ sent —Messrs J. S. Evans, S.M. (Chair- ] man), J. D. Milton, of Christchurch, ■ and E, C. Studholme, of Waimate. ] Mr A. W. Duncan (Secretary) and , Captain PilkiDgton (military repre- , aentative) were also present. The following appeals were dealt with: — James Manera, Roes,—Appellant, called up under Section 35, Btated be was a laborer, tingle, 36, with mother ■alive, three brothers, one being ulmarried, over 30, four sisters, two piarried. Three brotbeiß held lease
of farm about 1,000 acres with three years to rur. Tfce"e were 200 sheep, GO cuttle, 2 horses. Helped to supJ port his mother and B : aters. Another brother had been oalled up under Section 35 and had- been passed as fit. Witness was a driver on the main | south road. —Appeal allowed, appellant to go to the ballot. , James Anderson, John Anderson, , Hercules Anderson and William ( Arthur Anderson, of Waitaha —The , latter was present and give evidence , that he was 48 years of age. His mother was 70 years of age. Had four brothers, Hercules, James and John being unmarried. Three of them were working a farm of 480 acres, milking for the factory. Have 40 oows, 250 sheep, 3 horses. All three did the milking.—Appeals of James allowed, William Arthur allowed, bring over age ; John allowed owing to infirmity and Hercules dismissed. Neil Duncan McNicol and Alexander McNicol of Ross—The former gave evidence that he was 34 years of age, Alexander was 27 years and another 20 years. Did not know if the latter bad received notioe under Section 35' Witness had been medically examined and classed “ B.” Alexander was a laborer and unmarried and had no property. Neil Dnnoan MoNiooTa appeal was allowed, Alexander McNicol gave evidence that he was a laborer 27 years of age, single.. He helped to support his mother, 60 years of ege who lived at his brother's with witness. The Chairman stated a new point was involved. It was a question whethsr there were two brother* of whom the Minister knew, who were fit for service. There were three brothers but tie Minister ooly knew of two and one o t theße was uofit. Cases adjourned for a month to consult with other Chairmen. If the man came under the Beotionthe Board held there was no reason why he should not S°Robert James Bradley. William York Bradley, Arohie Bradley of Arabura, (Mi Sellers), Archie Bradley said he was a farmer, single, 27 years. H;b father and mother were alive. He had one brother, married. Robert James Bradley was acousiD. William York Bradley was a half-unde. Witness has four sisters. His father was past work. Had farms of 151 acres, with 22 milkers. Hta married brother also had a farm three miles away. Did not know his father’s position. Got no wages. Could not gat anyone to fill his place if he left. Three Bisters were working away from home. One at Grey used to milk before she loft-
William York Bradley deposed be was a farmer, 31, with five brothers, Johnson Bradley is 40 years, one, Robeit Jsmss is 51, John ia 37, Thomas was 25, Joseph 45. All were married, Witness had previously of*
fered for service. Robert James Bradley, only sou of David Bradley, Arahura, was 24 years of tge. Decision—Arohie Bradley’s appeal under Section 35 was allowed, not comicg under the Section. William York Bradley allowed, being unfit, Class 8., Robert James Bradley allowed, cot coming under Section 35. Archie Bradley’s appeal from second bailot would be dismissed, and he was given a month to arrange affairs, the Court considering the family could easily arrange the work of the farm. John Oolletfc, Matainm (Mr Sellers) —Deposed he was married 11 months ago, age 37, no parents, two brothers, one married, and one single, 25 year?, and one sister. Have farm of 940 acres l.i.p. 150 sheep, 45 cattle, 6 horses. Was managing farms of J, Burroughs (in oamp) and J Denr.ehy (motor service.) Had managed the latter for 4 years ( It was of 1,600 aore?. Burroughs has 700 acres aod 700 sheep, 60 head of cattle and 7 horses—Appeal adjourned, ■ine die. If applicant ceases to continue present occupation he must notify the Department.' William Howo and Arthur Howe, cf Hokitika. The latter gave evidence, He was a laborer, 34 years, single, with mother, two brothers, Albert 14, William 28. Witness enlisted and was discharged in August last. William Hows was classed unfit. The Chairman said Arthur Howe should not have been called up under Section 35, Both appeals would be allowed. Clandß D Hodgson of Ross and Joseph William Hodgson of Auckland —The former stated he was 26 years of age. Had a mother aged 70, -and six brothers, Joseph 40, George single 40, Thomas married 38, John married 30, Richard married. Joseph lived at Auckland. Had been medically examined and passed class A. His mother had 96 acre?, 16 cattle, 22 sheep and 2 horses. Had seven sisters, two being at home.
The Chairman said the position was rather a peculiar oue. There were three brothers liable, one in Auckland, one in Wanganui and one here. The Auckland appeal had been sent here for hearing, which was quite unreasonable, but he had sent, a certificate showing he was over age and was therefore out of it. That left the question of whether there were two brothers under the Saotian, but they had no | information whether the Wanganui brother had appealed or not. Under the circumstances, though they felt that the young man Bbould go, they were not certain of the actual position and would allow the
1 appeal under Section 35, but he i would have to pro to the ballot. William Trembath, John TremDatb, James Trembath, of Roes. Johu Trembath deposed he was 36, single, father over CO, two brothers, both single, two sister?, one a cripple and one a widow. Father has 260 acres. The Chairman said there were three brothers of military age. Which would be the best one to go ? Witness did not know. With one brother he worked th 9 father’s farm and the other brother and sister worked the la ter’s farm. James Trembath stated he was 31 years of age, siogle. Could not say which onß could best be spared. William was 27 years old. Decision—Oat of three brothers all medically fit one must go. William was the youngest and he must ro. The two other appeals would be allowed. Henry James Levett, when called did not appear. Frederick George Amberger of Koiterangi—Appellant said no was a farmer, 26 years, married, with father and mother, and three brothers, Phillip 35, single, Otto married, 32, Henry 22 Bingle. Phillip had been at Gallipoli and had heed discharged. Oito had been to camp about six weeks and was then discharged. Henry enlisted in the 13ths and was rejected. His father had a farm of 250 acres Borough lease and 60 head of cattle, Witness worked the farm with the assistance of Henry who was not strong. Decision —Appeal dismissed, appellant to be allowed to end of May to arrange affairs. James Ernest Smith of Koiterangi—He asked for extension of time* three months fiom December. He bad keen discharged from camp as unfit in 1916. Decision —Adjourned for a month for medical examination. If not classed A, would be left where he was. Jumßß Joseph Ableson of Roes — Witness stated he was 37 years cf age. Had father 84, no brothers* four sisters, two being married. Put in a'l ha earned for the home. Worked for last six months flax cutting, Was doing his utmost to assist the family. The Court adjourned at I p.m. AFTERNOON SITTING. The Court resumed at 2.80 p.m. James J, Ableson—adjourned for a month to see what arrangements can be made.
Henry Heveldt, of Mutainai—Applicant; stated he was a farmer, single* aged 40, with mother agßd 70. Four brother*, Frank, 43 married, Jojeph 38, married , John S 7, married ; August, 33, flicgle. Two sisters married. Holds 350 acres leasehold. Have 15 cattle, 300 sheep. Had not volunteered. Assists his mother. Have mortgage on section.
Decision—The Committre considered if he was fit to go to the front then he Rhould go, but if not ia Cla&s A then should be left where he was.— Adjourned for one month for medical examination.
Hamilton Wood?.— Applicant said h 9 was a dcdr? farmer, 32, single, with brother 26, two sisters, one married and one with witness, His brother and self held 126 acrss, Arahura Native Reserve. Had 40 head cattle, 1 horse. Was milking 25 cowp. Also held contract for supply of batter boxes for Arahura Factory. Case adj earned for medical examination and if found fit would have to
William Reid—-Medically examined class D, Appeal allowed as unfit. The Court adjourned at 3 pm. till 4 p.m to enable attendance at the funeral of Dr Macaudrew of officers and others engaged at the sitting.
