THE CENSUS.
Movasiant of Population. Political Representation Affected WEOMrGTW, Jan 12 The H. n 3. vV. Ro-seß, MinWr of Internal Affiirn, announced to-ctoy thv followir>!> census figured dealing with the population of the Dominion, excluding Maore: —
The increase on the 1911 cr n'-tifl f r the Dominion, excluding Maoris, Islanders and troops abroad, i? 90.831. Commenting on these figures, the Minister said—The most sinking fact in oonneotioa with the return is the
enormous increase shown in the ponrlation of the North 1-land as compared with the South. This baa been going on for a number of ycarp, In the census of 1906 the population of the North Island was 476.732, and excluding military camps it has now increased to 642,553. On the other hand the population of the South Island which was 411,340 in 1906, rose to 444,735 in 191 L and now hai increased by only 3329 during the five years and a half since the 1911 census was taken. The position, of course on these figures would appear to imply that the South Island has not retained its normal iuorease, but tha position of the South Inland, in fact of the whole Dominion is largely affected by the absence of over 50,000 men with [the Expeditionary Forces; The total number which left New Zealand fer the front ie some 63,000, but of this number from 8000 to 10,000 already have returned. Probably, however, the most interesting feature about the returns is the question as to how the figures will affect the future representation of the people in Parliament. ißoughly speaking, probably four, and pcssilly five, seats may be transferred from the South Island to the North, as a result of the huge drift of population that has taken place.
