The Worksop dredge washed up on Friday for 31ozs 15dwts of gold for 90 hours’ work. The Reefton Jockey Club made a profit of about £4OO on its summer meeting. The Club will race again in the autumn, the week following Hokitika. On Wednesday afternoon a man named Frank M’Aleer, employed on Mr W. Dunstan’s chaffcutter at Jiafraia, Canterbury, met with a serious accident. He was feeding the chaffcutter, when his left hand was caught and passing through the rollers, was severed at the wrist.
The exceptionally long spell of flue weather was broken on Saturday night when light showers fell for some hours. The weather cleared after daybreak and yesterday was again gloriously fine. It is understood Mr R. Adamson, the well-known southern sePler, has purchased til’s speedy mare which ran under Mr Cassidy’s colours in the Jubilee Gold Cup. Captain Alan D. Stitt, O.C. 13th Company Ist Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, France, writing under date Nov 3, to the Lady Liverpool Committee, Hokitika, says : —“I beg to acknowledge the receipt of a parcel of sock.?. I have to thank you on behalf of the officers and men of this Company, and I can assure you that they are much appreciated, especially now the cold weather is coming on. The socks have been given to the men from the West Coast in this Company.”
A special parade of “ H ” Company will take place to-morrow (Tuesday) evening at 7 o’clock, All membeia are requested to be present. A Dunedin ooereepondent says it is considered improbable that the Hons T. Parata and George Jones, whose membership of ihe Legislature has expired by effluxion of time will be reappointed. Un the other hand parliamentarians expect that the Hon W. F. C. Carncroßß, ohairman of committees will be appointed for a further term.
