Sedition ChargesNapier, Jan 10 Two Wellington men, Patrick Campbell and B, W. Wilion, wharf labourer and wool storeman, were sentenced in the Magistrate’s Court to-day to two months' and one mouth’s imprisonment respectively for tedit'ous uttcracoss. Ic waa stated in Court that they had come to Napier on an anti-conscription campaign.
A Jockey’s Death

An inquest concerning tha death of joekoy John Cannond Leslie Chaafe, aged sixteen years, who was killed whilst riding in the S fl t<lera’ Handicap at tho Northern Wairoa Racing Club’s meeting on Satuidav, was opened oti Saturday evening, b&fo r e Mr Thoznas Webb, coroner. Evidence of identification waa given ; also that of Dr Cramp, who deposed that death was due to concnssion of the brain. Tne inquest was then adjourned for the empanelling of a jury. The jury yesterday inspected the racecourse and to-day the court again Rat for seven hours and took lengthy evidence of jockeys and others, and of Angua, Gordon, stipendiary steward. In the opinion of the stipendiary steward the whole course compared favorably with other country racing tracks.
The evidence showed that a few yarns from the start Gold Las, ridden by the deceased, fell when overhauling the other horses, and broke his neck, and Chaafo died while being removed to hospital. The portion of the course where the accident occurred was declared to be one of the aouadest parts of the track. A verdict was returned that deceased met his death accidentally by falling from his horse.

Wellington, Jan 10 The Minister of Internal Affairs annonneed to-day that a Royal Commission had been appointed, consisting of Mr Justice Hosting (chairman) and Messrs O, F„’ Thomas (Auckland) and W. Milne (Oamaru), to inquire into the general effect of the leasing powers enjoyed by borough and city councils, and whether earns are in the hast interests of the corporations concerned, and whether the system of valuations prescribed by section 137 of the Municipal Corporations Act is satisfactory in its application, and if not, what alterations should bs made. The commission is returnable not later ihaln March 1, Killed on Railway Wanganui, Jan 10 A middle-aged man, whose identity at present is unknown, met bis death at Aramobo railway station late this afternoon under tragic circumstances. Deceased was a passenger on the Wellington train to New Plymouth, and a carriage was shunted off and attached to the Wangaaui train. Aa this train commenced to leave, deceased evidently, realised that ha was in the wrong train and endeavoured to jump off, with the result that ha fell beneath the wheels of a carriage. Decsased was apparently about 60 years of age, and had in hiß pocket a return ticket to Thorndcn, issued at Inglewood on January 2.
