A visitor at the jubilee race meeting, who had not been ou the course for twenty years, when whst siruek him most, said that in the two days, ha had not seen one person under the influence of liquor and had not heard any expression of bad language. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning before Messrs D. J. Evans and C. J. Nightingale, Justices, Wm Miller, Alias Wellp, pleaded guilty to a charge of obtaining goods from W. McKay and Bcn by false pretences while under the influence of liquor. The acrured was convicted, sentence to be deferred, cn condition that he enhet within a week, which he promised to'do.
The New Zealand Times says—ln order to probe to the bottom certain alleged irregularities in connection with the supply of military requirements, a departmental inquiry is now being held in Wellington. It is alleged that certain members of the staff of one of the Defence Department's branches are implicated, as well as some business men of the city. The proceedings are boing kept strictly private.
