|PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT]. Wellington, Jan 8 Thß controversy over the high price nf milk in Wellington has reached a climax. Dairy farmers have contended that their returns would be inadequate if the price were reduced and they would be forced to start cheese-making. A number of conferences, with producers and retailers, under the presidency of the Mayor of Wellington, failed to have a satisfac* toy result. Now, states the Minister of Agriculture, the Board of Trade have investigated the proposed increased wholesale priee, to commence to-mor-row, it reports that the increase is unjustifiable. Cabinet will consequently consider immediately what steps Should be taken to check exploitation. A Rough Trip. WELLINGTON, Jan. 9. Tho Mararoa arrived from Lyttelton this morning two hours’ late. A quantity of water found its way into tho saloon in a heavy sea off Wellington Heads. On of tho ship’s boats was considerably damaged through the falls carrying away. Several members of tho crow sustained minor injuries. Tho officers state that it was ono of the worst trips in their experience in the Wollington-Lyttelton ferry service. The Governor (Lord Liverpool) was amongst tho passengers. Suicide. Haweiu, Jan 9 Carl Schikker, a Swiss farmer, of Otakiho, was found on Saturday night with his head blown opeD. Deceased had placed a detonator in hie mouth and fired it. A verdict of suicide while temporarily insane waa returned. A Child Killed. Blenheim, Jan 10 The five year son of J. Maloney wag instantaneously killed at Picton, when attempting to cross in front of a motpr driven by Kuru Love.
Rain in Canterbury. Christchurch, Jan 9 The drought from which Central Canterbury has been suffering severely for two month?, is effectively broken. Rain commenced to fall a*, six l*st evening, continuing throughout the night, the fall to 9.30 this morning being 1.375 inches, with prospects of more rain. Giean of rape turnips etc, which looked like a failure are now assured. The raia came too late to materially aff.;ct the grain crons, bat feed prospects are im .istieoly improved. Attempted Suicide Carterton, Jan 9 A woman named Hilda Kobenst6in, reported as missing yesterday, was discovered about 8 30 last night hiding behind an advertising boarding. Previously she had spent her time in a clump of bushes a little distance away. She was brought before the Court this morning charged with attempting suicide a-d rsmanded. Meantime she io under medical treatment. Ifon J AllenDunedin, Jan 10 Hon J. Allan left Wellington today. In an interview he paid a tribute to' the way tbe people pf New Zealand were taking tbe war. Speaking of the ballots, he said in spite of the lack of precedent and the need to make the procedure as they went along effective, the third ballot had already enabled them to send over 600 men to camp.
