The Hamilton FireHAMILTON, Jan. 6. ■At the fu-o at Ellis and Burnand’s timber factory, the efforts of the brigade .were considerably hampered by the low water pressure. They managed, however, to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjacent dwellings, while the hulk store of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company was saved. The total damage is now assessed at £21,000. The insurance is £B,loO j in the Commercial Union. Daylight Saving. SYDNEY, Jan 7. The Daylight Saving Act is working saticfactorrily as far as general business is concerned, but the theatres and picture shows which arc also saddled with tho burden of tho Amusement Tax complain of reduced attendances, in some cases forty per cent. The people show a tendency, during the present hot weather at any rate, to spend their extra leisure in surfing rather than staying in town. The dairying industry is not enamoured, as the new hours means the shortening of their already short light before catching the earlier trains. Cows, whose habits are not regulated by the clock show an objection t-o having their rest broken and are yielding less milk, Queensland Floods. Brisbane, Jan 6 The town of Hughendon is isolated, and a large part of the northern section of tho town is under water. The floods there and at Longreach are records. The water at Clermont has subsided, but wide districts elsowhere are still submerged.

SYDNEY, Jim. fth. The State wheat office continues to receive reports of attempts o burn or otherwise damage the wheat stacks throughout the State. The Government is calling for tenders for the erection of a bulk-handl-ing wheat system, with a terminal elevator of three millions’ bushel capacity, in Sydney, one of eighty thousand bushels in Newcastle, and country elevators with a total capacity of twelve millions.. The estimated cost of tlhe installation is £2,000,000.
