ORGAN RECITAL.

Mr. Douglas Tayler's programme at; the organ recital given by him at St. James's Church on Thursday night, though of a varied and delightful nature, did not draw anything like as large an audience as it deserved-r-is-o. .often a -discouraging feature of out local musical events. The player's.repertoire ranged from, the gayesit soherzo > to the most deeply religious music, as exemplified in Bach's compositions. In reference to this a say..ig of Ruskin'© comes to mind, which < •—though it is obvious t&at great writer never doubted the truth of his state; ments!—-may be taken for what it is -worth. It runs: "I say, all ancient art was religious; that is to say, religion was its first object; private luxury or pleasure its second. I say all modern art is profane; that is, private luxury or pleasure is its first object; religion its second," which finally settles the 4 'ancient versus modern art" battle which is ever raging in otnr midst. The programme submitted on Thursday night woo as follows:—Sonata in Q Minor, Ist Movement, (Merkey); a "Siciliana," (C. Calkin), (b) Scherzo in B. Minor (W. Faulkes); Antfiean, "O Saviour of the World," (Goes); Intermezzo and fichergoso from Bth Sonata, (Rh'einberger); Anthema, "lift Up Your Heads"; Andante from 2nd Sonata, (Borowski); vocal solo, Mrs. {Strickland; Songs Without Words," (J. B. Calkin); Imperial-March (Elgar); solo, "The Praise of God," (Beethoven) Miss Mona Carrick; Choral Prelude "6 Man, Thy, grievious sin lament" (Bach); Crristmas Pastorale from **The Light of the World," (Sullivan); Nuptial Postlude (Guilmante); hymn, "The Day Thou Gav©Bt»» Interesting comments by tie organist greatly added to the interest of~ the programme.
