' He wins the golden bridle offered Toy Carmelita as a riding prize at a festival, thus incurring the enmity of Ramirez,* a dashing young Caiballero in love with Carmelita. Ramirez becomes a tool of Mad-.lux, leader of the oiitlaw American clement fomenting trouble in Southern California. Banning, returniirg from the north with news of the admission of Cali- ' fornia to • the Union, is captured by ■Maddux's men. Maflduv denounce? j.ihim to Carmelita and her father as an unscrupulous adventurer. • (Carmelita has faith in Banning and aids in his escape. She brings aid from San Rosario while Banning holds the rancho against Maddux's men. Ban- , ning and Carmelita plight their troth.
