"BY-THE-WAY."

A PATRIOTIC PIANO. It was recently related that in a country township during the war, it was found necessary to purchase a piano for the local hall, and very fortunately one was offered to the local authorities at a very low figure. The offer was accepted and the bargain closed, but the town fathers reckoned without I>he citizens who, when it became known that the piano was of German make, voiced their indignation, with no uncertain sound. The upshot was an indignation meeting in the hall which, was packed for the occasion. Dignitaries from far and near travelled thither to make their stirring and patriotic objection, with the result that a fine instrument of well-known manufacture "was installed, and all— <a\ nearly all—>wer,e happy! But the time arrived when it became necessary to tune the ipiano, so a tuner was secured, but in the course of his operations became suspicious of camouflage, and on scraping away the paint, found inscribed thereon the name of a German piano manufacturer!
