AN EXPLANATION.

Speaking to the deputation which, waited on the council on Monday evening the Mayor drew attention to a misstatcment made by a correspondent in "the "Hutt News" last week, who .stated that a total of £24,000 would be available in the borough for Traemploymcent relief.' The Mayor explained that the subsidy on loan monies was paid on labour vmly, based on a wage of 14/- per clay. The loan schedule provides for £8000 worth. \of work and tie estimated subsidy on this, on the basis outlined above is £2800. The Local Government Loans Board in dealing with the borough's application to borrow £8000^authorised the raising of that sum less tKe estimated subsidy; which means that the borough, will actually raise £5200. For that sum plus the subsidy it ' will bo possible to carry out work- to t-he

extent of £8000.
