RED CROSS ACTIVITIES

We have to acknowledge with thanks the following parcels, etc:—Friends, per. Mrs. Cawrdchael, 25 Kiwi St., Mesdames.JJood, Maitai St., Salt, 16 Knights Rd./ Doxg, ' Huia St.; Poole, Hautana St.,' Clarke, 72 Victoria. St. Petone, Mv Pil-; «nuir,St; ; Blythe .(-address unknown)' Ije, St., ; . Sir. Alex Robertsm/-/-), Mr. Austin (bread), Xabouv , P«rty (clothes, utensils and jam) We have -this week fbund a family who have not asked for .help, neither do they desire limelight .or* piiblieity. Their case was' brought to us by a> friend, unknown to them. . The facts are that the father^ who is- not too strong, has been out: of work a long1 time, and the home had to be disposed of and shelter taken with friends tem-t X^orarily. T-hey are renting a house at 30/- weekly, and to pay it the mother •has been doing what work she can and the father half-days anywhere he can get .".it, hoping that •he will get a - jdtb" soon. There are two phiMren ages 10 and 7 years, whom we can fix'up'all' right with clothes (they have not been! let get down to rags by the v&ry decent parents), and have a nice layette, mad^ by the Girls of St; James's Club, Lower ■ BGutt, a beautiful 'gift;, for tie other toby who is coming along soon, and' whose coming has made the getting of a home of their own an urgent' need. The sole contents of the home are a bed, chair, table and old couch, and if there is anyone with a piece of ture which she would like to dispose, of, a bed or chairs, floor-coyefings, mats^ etc., she may, be sure they would be" welcomed, and kept nicely clean. Theyl, have food from the Social Welfare and

are asking nothing but w.ork themsel-1 vcs ; the Woman is willing to give a:faill return of work, for any tiling really useJ ful, it is we whb are their friends who have taken upon ourselves to try to get some semblance of a home for .them.A post-card to me with address;of ionoil of any. j|paTe furniture wotdd. engine that the things would be called for as soon as possible., or the address could be left at '■■'. Hutt News'' by telephone,' or with me, also by 'phone, 749 Lower1 Hutt. Address < 'Bronte " Leightori Avenue. The mpthe.r is sincere in (her' statement that she is willing to work1 in return for. anything, they are not of the "scrounging" type. It isdis-' tressing to find so many heroic strug* gles going on in our district, which come to the knowledge of the Bed! Cross by accident or .reports of friends interested, and the pride of those who hayekept quiet-is to be admired, butit can be carried too far, and if folks are willing to help without publicity} then that help shouild, be taken in thespirit in which it is oiteTed.. We gei) told that there are worse cases than those we help, who would not come to

us. Well, if taM is the case, we are sorry, but one cannot knock at do.ors 1 and offer to come secretly by night with goods. We admire the 4 courage of those who put their pride (often1 the wrong sort) in their jpockets and come for their children's sakes; Threef more men tramped Here this week from Wllington to see if we couild give them a shirt each and set of underwear wMeh

I we. were &>ble to stpply, very Much -darned, and brother mbtii had been very dissatisfied with the original pat-< tern and embroidered the tails of I the' singlets and backs of the kha;ki shirts, i their^ work is done though here, with great slaughter of the innocents.

The number of; applications last month ■were 79, garments given 647, i)oots 61 pairs, 4 complete layettes, 4 blankets, 72 coats, meat, jam and milk.'... The.ibolt of flannelette has arrived; no magic, just prosaically ordered from a warehouse for us by Headquarters. We have a fine stock of second-hand new-boms* singlets and: coatees, thanks to Hutt resident. ■;-■■-• ■ ' ■'•• .
