V THE STORY. "t^'oil .Hamilton, a broadwalk photographer, is interested in the activities of his neighbour, Madame Silvara, fake .seeress. .Veil makes the fake spirit photographs which she sells for £5 a piece to simpletons. Neil himself has studied spiritualistic tricks and hopes to break into the "racket" in a 'big way. Evelyn Brent, a dancer out of work, comes in for some photographs. She faiats from, hunger and exhaustion. Neil revives her. He gives her a job in hisstudio, posing for spirit photographs. Later he trains her to act as" his ''medium." - Aiaiiame .Silvara arranges an appointment for them to. put on a "seance" at the home of the wealthy E. H. Calvert. Before they go there they,learn that Calvert's daughter, now engaged to David Neweil, had been in love with tin aviator who was killed in an accident.. Armed, with the details of the former lover's death, they prepare to putt on* the "seance." Evelyn tries to persuade Neil to give up the doubtful business, but he says the wealthy a-re fair game and she agrees to go through with- ifc. ' ■ ■* They stago the seance and shock Dojris with '•' messages ' '• from her dead lover. A few days later, Doris, held in the spell of trickery, comes to the studio for another seance. Newell, who suspects the fake, follows her, and a£tor a -fight with Neil, takes &era-way. E-vtflyn. pleads in vain with Neil to give up the hoodwinkcry.
A few weeks later Doris comes to the studio for another "seance. "This time
i;\ civil decides to queer Neil's game. Sixe; engages Wallace Mac Donald, an. actor friend, to pose as the dead aviator. Just as Neil is abouit to -begin Ms overtures to tlie spirit world he is amazed and terrorised by the the apparition of the dead man. The "ghost" in sepulchral tone*, announces that Neil is a lake. Doris, believing the words, leaves hurriedly. The ghost disappears, leaving NciL convinced that he had been t'iig;:iged in a risky business. He is reconciled later with Evelyn, but she never, tells him that it was a frame-up to .scare him away from his crooked '' racket. ''.'... '' CHARMING SINNERS.'' •■'■■ THE STOES&-' Kathryn Miles knows her husband, a wealthy doctor, is having an affair witih. ahA- best friend, Anne-Marie Whitley. Millies- and Anne-Marie strive to hide rlieir feelings, although the town is talk ifl<» of the affair. Into this delicate situation'comes Karl Kraley who, after ten years in Japan, still loves Kathryn. Kathryn decides to use him to discipline her husband. The affair comes to a climax wiien Whitley becomes suspicious of his wife. Kaihryn saves the guilty pair by lyings Mfles and Anne-Mario are forced to admit their indiscrotion to her. Miles, expecting an angry tirade from his wife, is astounded when she takes it in a matter of. fact way. • The. next day, Kathryn wins 15,000 dollars at the races. This gives her an of^ftriauiity she sought. She' tells Miles siuJt is leaving for a vacation in Italy with Karl. Miles' fury is vain and, in the end, he tells her that he loves her so. much, he will take her back when she. returns. ■■■~.■. Karl lams of her story to Miles and is eager to accompany her. Kathryn, horcrevitfr, although willing to punis-h her hratband, has no "intention of betraying. him- Bk© tells Karl that she is going to return to her husband after a solo trip to Italy and she bids her persistent lover a final farewell.
