BED CROSS ACTIVITIES.
The dance-Held iv the Tua Rua Hall on Wednesday, 23rd July for the purpose of raising funds to purchase material etc., for cases of distress in Hutt and Petone, was unfortunately a financial failure. Instead of the five pounds sV*hich we confidently hoped to make, we1 aye several shillings in debt, in spite of the fact that the R.A.0.8. Committee lent us their beautiful hall free of charge. Sir Alexander and Lady Rosberts attended ainojugst others, also Captain Galloway and a supporter from so* far afield'as Plimmerton. One ticket seller spent a whole day in sellingl 21/----worth of tickets, another two days in selling five, so evidently money was unebelievably scarce last week, seeing the cause for which it was needed. Socially, the affair was a success, everyone j seemed to enjoy the evening thoroughly, the Lewis Orchestra was considered a good one' by all, and Mr. Clarkson's extras were so well played as to call forth comment from those who are capable of. judging good musk. Lady Roberts with het spontaneous gaiety and warm friendliness, was a welcome visitor, as of course was Sir. Alexander. Capt. Galloway spoke briefly on the work of the Red Cross, and his enjoyment of the evening, saying he arrived feeling like an old man, but had progressed backwards as the evening wore on/ and was then as young as anyone. Far different Were the feelings of the hard-working committee, who had pre-! pared for 200 and had only 30 visitors, i luckily one paid £1 for his ticket, or the. loss would have been greater. Our next venture must bo priced at the nimble shilling instead of 1/6 and possibly more will venture to help us, but such a low charge in a small hall leaves very little over for the funds after allowing 3d. or 4d per head for supper, paying for the orchestra, printing and so on, and in future of course the hall, one wonders if it would not be easier to be like the Boy Scouts and earn a~ few pence each for the fund. We have to acknowledge with many thanks the following gifts last week:— Clothing: Mesdames Hill, Patrick St., Petone; M. "Wood, Matai St., Woburn; Reakes and Rowe, Pharazyn St., Wall, Tama St., Barnes, Bolter,, Trafalgar St., Salt, 16 Knights Road, Miss Garlick, Queens Road, Messrs Shearer and Co ■new socks and collars. We wish also tto record with thanks for the. thoughtfulness as well as the goods that the Hutt Branch of the Labour Party had been about to have a Jtonble Sale, 'but abandoned the idea and sent the goods !to the Red Cross instead. |We had two more young mothers this week, and are glad to say that we were able to fix t-lieni up with complete layettes, except for nappies. We had hoped to buy that bolt of flannelette with thtv proceeds of the dance, but
are in debt instead. Never mind, some* thing win be done about it. Those things are the first necessity and a big expense to the mother, particularly in these months of slow drying outdoors. I am. seething with ideas however, which I Ixope to -hatch before the old Stork beats me to it. Has anyone a single bed and bedstead going begging .please, or a few cabbages or leeks, for some children who need green stuff but parents too hard pressed to get it? P. E. JOYCE, Hon. Sec. Ladies' Auxiliary.
