Stewart, A. Walker, W. H. P. Barber, J. W. McEwan. .-.;..- Mr Hollands, engineer-general man-.' ager, explained that the feason for the>'j failure of power at Lower Hutt on Fri- ; day nights was due to the overload car- ■ ried. He had'made arrangements for meeting this requirement and there V» not likely to be a reoccurrence. He had alsff explained the matter to a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce. The sum of £5 was donated *o the Petone Technical School. The general. > manager . reposed that there were 9830 consumers. For the quarter 52 ranges^ 86 waterheaters, and 3 milking plants had •been installed. Regarding the line losses relief would be given as soon as the n<ew sub-station was erected. The present lines were built to carry 3000k..w Jbut they were now carrying nearly 5000 k.w. The line loss after 4000 k.w. was fully 50 per cent. BUYING MATERIAL A' discussion took place on the question of the Board's purchase of certain supplies such as petrol. Exception was taken by a member to supplies being obtained from sellers who -were not consumers" of the board's electricity if it was possible to obtain the supplies at the' same price through dealers who were also consumers .-of the board's power. A motion was submitted that the goods wherever possible, Be obtained from con-, sumers of the board's power. An amendment wae moved) that ihe matter of purchases be left in the hands of the engineer-generar manager (Mr E. F. Hollands) as heretofore; In speaking to the amendment the chairman, Mr E. Wifldley, said he felt rather strongly on the matter..The motion seemed to him to be rather un-Bri-tish. "I don't feel like supporting a change under the present circumstances. It is not sound, policy."" ' Mr J. W. MeEwan: I second that. Our general-manager can be trusted to cio the best for the board and the consumers] Surprise was expressed) by Mr A. W. Press at the turn the discussion had taken. He ha.d merely moved his motion in order that finaljty might he reached. "I have no desire he said '*to be uh-Brit-ish," It was explainedl by Mr Hollands that the interests of the board were very, carefully vproteeted in all purchases. On all purchases over £10 tenders were call- j cd. All accounts were carefully scrutinised. It was not always possible to get the goodsjfr6m consumers of the board's power. .. .Mr Press's motion was withdrawn, with the consent of the seconder . . Mr L. /Stewart, who was the only dissentient wheii Mr Windley 'c; amendment (now the motion) was put, said), '/.^..axa thankful I am a lone hander in tiu> instance. I want my vote recorded. It may be useful to refer to on some future occasion." ■'..;:
