CURE THAT COUGH.
A bad cough places far more strain On tile* system than a cold. Many lung troubles originate in neglected coughs. A cold is often followed by a cough, which soon yields to soothing drink or mixtures. THe real danger arises when a cough becomes persistent. Coughs ar,e largely due to ear troubles, gastric irritation, enlaTtged glands and, Children sometimes.develop a cough withdut any accompanyingl cold. This means that either a piece of' wax has becomes jammed in the. ear, or that some small plaything, such as a bead, •has slipped, into the organ. When the obstruction is removed, the child immediately recoVeTSi , Gastric irritation is largely due to unsuitable dieting. People suffering from stomach coughs should choose their foods with.the.utmost precaution. Bis-. muth is an excellent sedative. -It allays any irritation that may bo present. The only Temedy for coughs caused by enlarged glands is to . re-move . the source of the trouble. Nervous people, and especially those who have to speak in public, often acquire the hafoit of artificial coughing. If this habit is frequently indulged in, the throat becomes sore and painful. ■ Attacks of bronchitis are accompanied by short, dry coughs, which are' particularly painful to tHe throat. When
the inflammation develops, the cough becomes moist and paroxysmal.* It't&en makes it difficult for the patient to inhale. Steam kettles and warm alkaline drinks relieve the pain.
Ono of the first symptoms of .pneu-monia-is a hard, dry cough, which, causes p. pain in the side. In suoi cases a doctor should be called in, as complications may arise. . PJcnty of fresh, air arid exercise will enable sufferers from coughs to continue their work. When 'walking, deep .breaths must be taken at regular, intervals. Children often suffer from paroxysms of coughing at nigbt.. In such cases every mother should have her -chiHd thoroughly examined by a doctor, as the trouble is usually due eitier to enlarged glands or car disorders.
