CONFERENCE OF LOCAL BODIES
LEGISLATION DESIRED
f A conference of local bodies' representatives was held in the Petone borough Council Oil ambers last week to consider questions- relating to ;,tlie proposed ramp over t^e-.Hutt Road I;. railway crossing at Petone. ftepresenjtatives were present from the Wellington City Council, Hutt County Council, and Eastbourne, Petone and Upper Hutt jßorough Councils.
i After lengthy discussion the conferS ence (ieeided to recommend to the Petone Borough Council, as. the local body within, whose boundaries the crossing is to iiaye ja special Bill drawn up to be presented ito Parliament at the forthcoming session, setting out the provisions under which the ramp is to be constructed. It was announced that a promise had been given by Sir Joseph Wai;d, when i Brime Blinister^ that the Governmcjit I would bear two-thirds of the cost of the iramp and that the remaining onerthrni ; would have to be_ borne, by the various local bodies in the .proportions --a^eeri upon among themselves^ The conference 1 mainly concerned itself .with this .latter question and it was decided to have included in the Bill provision- for such local bodies to make the necessary.allocations arid in the event of their being, unable to agree, the Government to be given power to set up a commission to. decide for them. '
