Mary Jane was knitting a warm waistcoat for Mr. Bear, a woollen scarf for Bumpus, and a pair of warm gloves forMr. Punch. Mrs. Noah was busy making stockings for all the animals to hang up on Christmas Eve. Bumpus was very happy sticking pins into the pin-cushion lie was giving away.. . Every time anybody went into her house, old Mrs: ADuck sat on something she was making, so nobody Imew what it was. . "What shall we do on Christmas Day?" asked the French Doll.. "Let us have a nice quiet day by the fire," said old Mrs.- Duck. "Oh no!" cried all the toys, "that would;.be very dull!" "Let- us build a snow-man," squeaked the Chicken with the bald head. '*Ohno !" cried all the toys, '' we did that last year!" "Please," said Percy the pig, 'Met us make a big bonfire. and roast potatoes." •' "No," said the French Doll, "We will act a play." "What a good idea!" they all shouted. "What play shall.we act. "We will act 'Cinderella'," said the French Doll, "and Golly wog and I will choose the parts." "I do hope they will choose me to be Cinderella," thought MaryJane. Mr. Bear thought: "I hope they will choose me to be the Prince." The great big elephant hoped they would choose him to be the Fairy Godmother, because he did like helping people. This was the list that Gollywog and the French Doll stuck upon the door of the Post Office: Cinderella.. .The French Doll The Fairy Godmother Old Mrs Duck_ | The Ugly Sisters The two camels from the Ark The Stepmother... .Mrs Noah The Fairy Coach Dobbin and the Baker's cart., Mary Jane and.JMir. Bear were very sad when they saw the list^' but they were brave and did not let anybody know how disappointed they were. Bumpus could not help a tear running down his trunk, because he had wanted to be the Fairy Godmother. i Christmas Day came, and all the toys .put on their best dresses and went to see the play. The French Doll looked very pretty as Cinderella. All the toys -clapped when old Mrs Duck came in as the Fairy Godmother and {took her off to the ball. I Round and round danced the Prince and Cinderella, and they were so proud of themselves that j even after the clock had struck twelve they still went on dancing. "Please, it has struck twelve," called out Percy from the pit, but went on dancing. At last they got so giddy they eoul4 not go on with the play. "Oh dear! what shall we do now ? " cried the toys. ''We must have a new Cinderella and a new Prince, or we shall not be able to finish the play." | "I will be the Prince, and Mary Jane shall he, Cinderella," said Mr Bear. "Wake up, Mrs Duck, and we will go. on with the play." But Mrs. Ducfe. was fast asleep. "Oh deajv!-7' -cried, Mr Bear, 4 "who will be the Fairy Godmother - now?" "1 should like, to* be,* said Bumpus shyly, '' because then I could help dear Cinderella." -'■-Yes, yes," cried the toys, "you shall 'be the Fairy Godmother!" So Bumpus took the wand in his trunk, and they finished the play. It faa's very grand and the toys clapped and clapped. The Monkey-on-the-stiek gave Mary Jane a* bunch of flowers, and the Policeman made a speech and said: "We have never enjoyed anything- so much. Three cheers for everybody!"
