MARY JANE
Everybody in the nursery was very much excited. Where was Mary Jane, the Dutch" doll? She lived in a big house in a corner of the. nursery with Mr. Teddy Bear, Mr: Punch, and Bumpus the great fat elephant with the wispy tail. •' ■ "Where is Mary Jane?" asked Mr. Teddy Bear. The elephant shook his tail. He had not seen her. "Where is Mary Jane ?" cried Mr. Teddy Bear. Mr. Punch had his head under the sofa. He was looking for spiders. But he waggled his foot to show that he did.not know where Mary jane was. / , Mr. Bear wiped his whiskers nervously. Where «ould ; Mary Jane be ? they knew Where she was. He asked all the bther toys if The Soldiers said they did not know, but she might have gone milking. The Farmer said he did not . know, but she might have gone shopping. The Shopkeeper said he did not, know, but she might be paying a call on Mrs. Noah. i/Lr. Noah said that Mrs. Noah was lying down, but Mary Jane might be in the ark with his children. Ham, Stiem, arid Japhet all said No, they had not seen her, and they asked Mr. Bear to go away and shut the door quickly, as they were busy writing poetry. ! "I will go ancl look in the station," said Mr. Bear. "She may have gone somewhere by train to buy a new hat." So he went to the station and asked for a ticket. . "What sort would you like?" asked the Stationmaster. "A pink one, a green one, or a blue one?" "Well I have only a penny," said Mr. Bear. "Oh, that is quite all right/ said the Stationmaster. "You can have this old pink one. Where are you going?" "I don't quite know," said Mr. Bear. "I am looking for Mary Jane." "Well, do not lean out of the window when you go through the I tunnel* or Gollywog will get you. I saw him hiding there." All the toys were afraid of Gollywog. He- was so big and black. Just then the train came in. It had a bright green engine with yellow stripes. Mr. Bear got in and leant out of the window to say good-bye to the Stationmaster. The Guard waved his flag and blew his whistle, and off they went. .; ■ Mr. Bear was always forgetting things, and he quite forgot to take his head back into the carriage when he came to the tunnel. When the train was nearly; through the tunnel, Mr. Bear j thought he heard something, and then he thought he saw. something, and then he was quite sure that it was Mary Jane. She was trying to get her new hat away from Gollywog. But Gollywog held on tight. ~ Mr. Bear was so excited when he saw Mary Jane that he leant too far out/of the window, and fell bump right on top of Gollywog. Gollywog turned quite white with fright, and dropped Mary Jane's hat and ran away. "Oh, Teddy, Bear, J? cried Mary Jane, "you are just in time! Do you like my new hat? Gollywog was trying to take it from me." "It is very pretty," said Mr. Bear. "But you must always tell me where you are going. I thought you were lost. Now we will go lome to tea, and you can have half my pink ticket." All the toys cheered when they saw Mary Jane, except Ham, Shem, and Japhet, who went on playing, and Mr. Punch, whose nose had been bitten by a spider.
