WANTED-A GRAIDSTAND.

Though, the Hutt Recreation Ground could not boast a "Dinkum" pavilion

on Saturday afternoon last, it could at least boast tof having something alittle better than on the previou-s Saturday. A rude, and somewhat 'ragged grand--sfaiul was erected, by the energetic groundsman, Mr. Vagg, hear the north eastern side line to test, the possibilities of following t-he game from that angle. Although the stand was, not exactly an ornament, it provided seating accommodation for about. 40 people.and showed that there is a 'genuine desire on the part of certain people to do something to help fchmscives. That's the spirit ratepayers like to see. We un-

derstand .that there is talk in certain quarters of organising .for this great necessity. Each week revenue is being lost and more people arc bing discouraged from attending to see the line games that are being staged. Many people realise that it -is not altogether a fair thing at the present-time to expect tho Borough Council to provide ii'll of the money for a grandstand. Th« desire for this valuable adjunct to our Recreation Ground is so real, that we •believe it would riot be at all' impossible to raise several hundred pounds by means of bonds/Scaring a low rate of interest. It might not be tth.e most clesimbje thing to have a more or less temporary stand, we would all like to see a structure worthy of the beautiful ground, but when there seems to be

iit/tie prospect of securing'this ideal f-Qi* several years to come, we are inclined to make shift with the next .best Mii'fig rather than wait indefinitely. It is unfortunate that our councillors did not foresee this necessity years ago. The statement made by Civ Campbell at Monday's Council meeting to the effect that 't-he gate "receipts went fo the Rugby Union and not to the Hutt Club was rather misleading. Upon making enquiries we are informed that'3o per. font of the gate takings goes to the Soccer and to the Hockey Chubs. The Rugiby Union gives a grant to the local club each year for manning the gates. •T-he Rugby Union purchased Strand Park and a section of land at Taita and so provided*live grounds <to provide playing ai'eas,"whilst the Borough Council has .only provided the Recreation Ground. The fact that the, sports ibddies raised £1100 through, the gala a few" years ago seems to •have been forgottcm la.tely. tout nevertheless it. only ;^oes ; to show that they have already tlbh.e a great deal.to help themselves aiitl \vould doubtless do still more if they were offered t«he encouragement.
