THE LITTLE PINK PIG'S ADVENTURE
Percy was a little fat pink pig, who Jived in a cupboard under the bookcase. He had a tail like a cork-screw, which was very useful when he wanted to hang himself up, and he rolled along on wheels, because he found it was more comfortable than walking.
One day, when Tie was not lookr ing he rolled on to the railway line, and there he stuck. He had got his front wheels over, but he could not get his back wheels across too. He tugged and he pushed, but all he could do was to roll backwards and forwards, with the rail between his wheels.
Percy began to cry, because he was afraid the train would' come along and bump into him.
After a time he stopped crying, and looked up and down the line to see if the-train was coming: It .waMnot in sight, but heXcsuss|' hear it puffing away in the station. He was afraid that it might cpme along at any moment, and if it 'did not see him in time to stop, where would poor Percy be then?
"The train will; come an awful smack, if I don't leave the railway track," said Percy, and he was just going to begin crying ajrain when he saw Ham; Shem, and Japhet coming towards: him.
They weve going1 to play with Hani's new boat, and when they saw Percy stuck on the line they began to laugh
' ' Please, little. boy s ; '' sobbed Percy, "I am stuck on1 the line, and I want to come "o ff." '
"We are going to play with Ham's new boat,'' said • Shem, "and we have no time to pull you off the line." ',
"If I stay on the line," said Percy, "the train will come along and bump into me v "
"If we stay to pull you off, we shall not have time to play with Ham's new boat," explained Jephet. ' ■ -•■'■■
Percy felt that he wanted to cry again, for he could hear the engine up at the station, .puffing harder than ever.
: "Little boys,'* he said, ; "if you will help to pull me off the line, I will give you another new boat.' ■ ■
Ham, Shem. and Japhet talked very hard among vth eniselves. Then they said: '"If you will give lisa new boat each, then we will help to pull you off the railway ime.'< -
/"' Very well,'' sa id Percy, because he thought he heard the
guard blowing his whistle., though really it was Mr, Punch blowing his nose because a spider had just bitten it.
So Ham went to Percy's front wheels and pulled them, and Shem and Japhet went to his back wheels and pushed them; but they eottld not move 'poor Percy. Then Hani went-to the back and pushed, and Shem and Japhet went to the front and pulled; but still th«y could no.t move, poor Percy.
;Then'they"all- three went to the front and pulled, and then they all three went-to the \. back and pushed, but" Percy, the little fat pink "pig-,: was stuck fast on the railway line. . . :
' * Oh, please, can't you do something-?" cried Percy, because he thought he saw, through the trees, the guard waving his green flag, though really it was,the wispy tail, eating a cabbage-leaf.
Just then the Policeman came ■"'You can't: stay ther%" he said when he saw Percy on the railway line.
''Please, I don't-want to," sobbed Percy.
"Well, hurry up and get off, because the train is coming along," said the Policeman.
:•'■ 'I can't," howled Percy. ' ' I am stuck." ■ ■
At that moment the engine gave a whistle, and Percy was so frightened that his tail, came all out of curl. ■ ...
"Is ■ that somebody wanting help ?•'' asked the great., big elephant, who had. finished his cab-bage-leaf and was now going for a "walk; :
"Please, I am stuck on the railway line, and the train is coming," sobbed Percy.
There it was, just, coming round the corner. When the driver saw Percy he blew his whistle to tell him to get off the line, and the Policeman blew his whistle to tell the driver to stop, the train. But the driver coiild not stop, and the train- would have bumped into Percy if the elephant had been unable to help him.
. He lifted him off the line, with his trunk, and then he spanked him with his wispy tail for having been such a silly little pig.
"But I was glad I was able to help the little fellow," Bumpus said afterwards to the Policeman.
