LOWER HUTT COUNCIL
The regular meeting of the Lower Hiitt Borough Council was held on Monday/evening. There"•■ were present Deputy Mayor Cr. A. J". Hobbs and Councillors A. Grierson, J. Mitchell, J. R. 'Boyd, DV S. -Patrick, W. G. Meldrum, F. Campbell1, A. E. Carver... An apology was received from the Mayor, Sir Alex. Roberts, who was attending a conference on t'lneniployeci in Wellington.
Messrs Herd and Herd advised that under'the. will .of the-, late Mrs Kate M. " Barthorpe the sum of £2000 had been bequeathed to% the Borough to be expended in the erection of a substantial bmamental fence or wall, along the boundary fronting. Woburn itoad to the Recreation Ground,, and suitable memorial gates at the three entrances to the ground;-in memory of • her Jate husbandr who 'died 21st August, 1929.
His WpTship reported that he had duly acknowledged the generous gift. The plans were submitted by: the engineer and approved by the Council.
The Minister of Internal ' Affairs
wrote in reference to the' public enquiry to be held on the. 4th proximo ii 3 connection with regional planning.
Cr. Mitchell said that he strbngly favoured the Hutt Valley having its own scheme.
Cr. Grierson preferred to know what lines were-_to be followed before ex-
pressing an opinion
Or. Patrick was inclined to favour a separate scheme for- the Valley and considered the' scheme ; was too big to be decided at one meeting. He was'inr clined to think that the Hutt Valley should be a separate regipn. v
Cr.-Campbell agreed with the pre--vious speaker and pointed out that the long stretch of road between the two districts would be a bar to supporting the.-City scheme. He thought there should be two separate regions of town
planning,
Deputy-Mayor Hobbs did not think they should do more than express their opinions as', it would iiot be advisable to commit the Mayor to /a definite scheme. This course was adopted. *>
Cr. Patrick drew attention1 rto dangers at. the corner of White &:ijfjjlne< and Wainui Rpad. He^ asked ;^a'fe immediate steps be taken to imprpyc"' tlie conditions as they were dahgero.us "id children. The matter was referred to, the Works Committee.

COMMITTEE.
Market Street Property.-i-The Chief Borough Inspector reported that he inspected this house which is now vacant,, and stated that it is unfit for habitation, and should be demolished.
It is almost beyond repair as the stringers, plates and studs are decayed and riddled with, borer. The gutters require renewing and the roof requiresrepairing, while the verandah roof, requires to be renewed.- Sundry window? are broken. It is . estimated .that it wonltl cost £450 to carry out major to-j pairs but this would still leave . the' frame riddled with borer. Your Committee has therefore to recommended that the suggestion of the Borough Inspector that the building be .demolished. 1';.; . ' opted. ■ , ;
Arnal'pituation.—Your Committee, has to rtp^rt that it ha,s received the report giving all the data re the suggested amalgamation o^f'this Borough with thai, of Petone. The report is a volu-
minous one and the Committee has instructed that copies are to be made and each Councillor, provided with a; copy. Estimates.—Your Committee has to ; report that a considerable amount of time was devoted at its last meeting toeohsideration of the Estimates for the current financial year, and it is hoped that the matter will be finalised for 1 consideration by Council during thecoming month.
The report was adopted. PARKS AND BATHS COMMITTEE,
Selling Rights, Recreation Ground.— A letter was before the Committee enquiring upon what terms the selling: rights for soft drinks, ice creams,, etc.,. would be. disposed of for the Recreation Ground. Your Committee has replied that the disposal of these fights had' not been contemplated and when such a 'step was intended the fact that therights were '" available for. disposal would have to be adverti/ed so that all concerned would have equal opportunities in the matter.
Ni^e Nae Reserve.—An application has been received from the Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis Association stating that it is prepared, to take oyer thi& whole or portion of this ground foj>'th& purpose of laying down Tennis -."Courts.. Your Committee has . replied stating that the ground is not in the condition to be used for any sports at the present time and the levelling and- goeassing of the area is receiving consideration, and further that when the allocation for sports purposes is being made the Association's application, will receive consideration.
Massey Avenue Reserve.—Arrangements have been made to hand this Reserve, viz., the one opposite" the. Wo-
burn Bowling \Club's greens, over to a Contractor who. intends to plough the land and take a crop of potatoes off same, and will, at the end of approximately a year, hand the area back to the Council ready for laying out.
Trafalgar Street Reserve^—A> similar arrangement, as detailed in the previous paragraph of this report, can ber made, and your Committee has decided to enter into same with the approval of the Commissioner of Crown Lands. This, step is necessary as the Reserve has not, as yet, been actually vested 'in the Council^ but it is not expected that the Commissioner will withhold his consent. : ■"■•■.' WORKS, DRAINAGE AND HEALTH: COMMpCTTEE. •Meadows' Subdivision (Wrhite/s ■Linfe-J'.-^lt will be' remembered that there is a roadway to be formed in this subdivision and the subdivider has asked if the Council will be prepared ' to. undertake tha construction of the road. Your Committee has to. recommend that the proposal be agreed ta provided the estimated cost of the work is deposited prior ta its cpmmencement. Repairs- to Stables.—The Borougb Engineer reported that certain repairs estimated to cpst £25 were necessary at tKe stables and your Committee hasluthbrised the work being put in hand.
