GAS BOARD
A meeting of the Petone and Lower Hutt G*.s Lighting Board was held last week. There were present Mr. W. G. Lodder (chairman) and Messrs W T Strand, "W. GL Meldrum, C. P. Bvockelbank and E, T: Hogg, and the Secretary (Mr W. F. Sturman) and the Gas Manager'(Mr H. Appleyard).
Owiiic- to the vacancy caused by" the resignation of Mr V. E. Jacobson, the appointment of a successor was.left m the hand* of the Petone menders. The board will make a iinal choice at ate next meeting. . it was reported that the board had on order from England a governor which would be used to give an increased pressure of gas in the Belmont distnet. The-Gas Manager reported for the month of April as follows:-Coal carbonised, 62 tons, gas manufactured 9171,000 cubic feet, an average of 15,234 cubic feet per ton. Increased manufacture over April 4929, 100,000 cubic feet. Average calorific value 475 B.Th.U. Estimate of coal in stock on Mi\y Ui., 217 tons llcwt. 114 tons Ocwt. of coke was sold and 8,200 gallons of tar.

The 6in main along Jackson Street, Potone, from Gear (Street, to Hutt Road, lms been .completed. This work was done in view of the permanent sealing of
Jackson. Street. v . I conferred with the Petone Borough Engineer, with regard to the laying of a small main along the south side of Jackson Street in view of the proposed sek\ ing» and he wishes the mains to be laid under'the footpath, and as there is no immediate hurry, for this work it is'suggeßted to hold it over in the meantime. The manual charging retort |S being erected anoi will be in operation Nearly in May. Number 9 retort bench was completed and put into commission during the last week of the month, and Number 10 bench will be completed in about a fortnight's time, when the retort setter will proceed with the erection of the settings in the new house.
