NOTES.
With another game or two together the Hutt back division will play a more important par*. The material is there and it requires only a little moro confidence on the part of one or two players- to make the Tearguard one to be respected- by-opposing teams. Javman gave a better -exhibition than m the previous game, buit his attempts at line kicking too "often ended in the leather falling .into the hands of the
opposing full back. To. be of any value to his side it is imperative t-hat a full back should bo able to find touch from any pant of the field. In Bussell and Ball the team has two good wingers. Both plaf^ a different style of game, the former relying on His strength, and weight to force his way over the line. The later has to re-]y on his speed and a good swerve to carry him through. That he is a ealss winger there is no doubt whatever. In every game in which ie -has taken part to date, he has had limited opportunities to score, in spite of which he haß managed to not eh at least one try in ea<sh game. On his showing in the Oriental match, this player is also a very capable centre. In Saturday's game neither wing got much to do, but what work came their way was carried out in a thoroughly satisfactory manner Ball's try was a brilliant effort, which left the opposition standing. Pomare again showed, sound knowledge of what is required of a back. He repeatedly drove back the opposing side with long range kicks. Nees did all that was required of him at centre. Todd is already showing an improvement in positional play and is bound to improve •with practise. His goal kicking from difficult angles is likely to be a jmatefc.winning factor. Feeney got through a great deal of work and stood up ta a. lot of haid stuff. It needed a stout hearted player to flop down at the feet of the Poneke forwards, but this young five-eighth does not appear to think twice before falling on the ball. Judge made quite a good ishowing behind the serum. The opening he made for Ball was a prety piece of :work. Dowsett ■gave an improved display. He appeared to keep a little too far away from the serum^ at times, Great praise is dtte to all. t2he forwards for the way they stuck to their job. All caught the eye during various stages of the
game.. Their smothering of the oppos: ing half back and five-eighths played a big part in their team's victory.
j This week's game is'against. Oriental. "Orior" have the -heaviest pack in the competition —Ward, Cave; Graham and the two ■ Prhrgles,-must, average well ovei fourteen-stone each) so-if •will need a well packed scrum to beat them for possession. They, also will be well served for line out work,, with •several ■tail forwards. The backs should be evenly matched, with the local sido [having an advantage on the wings. LOWER GRADE. Junior A.—Hutt 11, vY Oriental 3. This team gave a very convincing dis--1 play. Sundgreen, Hausen and Ross 'played outstanding games, in the backs. Junior B lost to Marist 9 —o. This , side 'has now 'quite a fair ba%ek. line, but Tequires stiffening up in the forwards. Thirds defeated Wellingbon B by 12 —0. Meßherry scored two tries. FoiiTths won by 6 —3 from Wellington B. The boys went fairly well for, their opening game. Their serthgth lies in t»he formvrds, on which they will have to rely to win their matches. Skippage jni'd Cunningham will strengthen the(team. Spencer, Clegg and Jones (backs) and Foster, McHolm,. Miller and Soaker (forwards) showed up well.
