HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of wiie L.ovver xlutt .Borough Council was held on Monday evening. Present: Sir Alex. Roberts (Mayor), Crs. Mitchell, A. Grierson, A. J. Hobbs, 1». to. Jfatriojv, A. ~E. Carvei, .W. fcr. Meljlrum and J. E. Boyd.

Mrs ii. f. Rishworth and family wrote acknowledging the Council 's condolence in their recent bereavement .and expressing, thanks for floral tributes. The Mayor referred in feeling terais to the death of Mr. Rishworth, and stated that the town had lost one of its best citizens. The late Mr Rishworth was a. mayor of the borough and was always in the forefront of any progressive movement. The Mayoress (Lady Roberts) wrote conveying thanks to the Council for its very generous donation towards the Obstetrical Endowment Fund. The Mayor stated that the local fund amounted to £240 which be considered was excellent. j Permission was granted to the proprietors of the King George Theatre to. •show a suitable ■ programme of pictures on th 6 night of Good Friday. The Borough Solicitor wrote forwarding a resolution to be passed in. conriec- '- tion with the lowering of hedges at the Waterloo Road and Cornwall Street intersection. The resolution was passed. The engineer reported that the building permits for the month :of March were 74 of a total value of £38,350. The Librarian reported that fpr the month of March 1830 books were taken out, 19 new books added, 8 new subscribers, 11 members withdrew, total number-of subscribers 302. The Ranger reported that up to the 31st March 550 dogs had been registered in the borough. The Mayor reported that the Anzae Day services will be held on the Recreation Ground at 10.30. There will be only one service this year. PARKS AND BATHS COMMITTEE The committee reported as follows: — Allocation of School Grounds: Your Committee has to report having received the usual applications for play^ ing areas in the Recreation Ground for the forthcoming season, and has to recommend that two grounds be allocated to Rugby football, two grounds to Hockey, and one to Association football,' at the same rentals as were paid last year. The above allocation is the same as has existed on the Recreation Ground to/ a number of t seasons past. Use of Pavilion. —The Lower Hutt Association Football Club has made ap-! plication for the use of the Recreation Ground Pavilion on Wednesday evening for training purposes. Your committee has to recommend that the application be granted on the same terms as a similar application was granted last year.

Extension of Billiard Room Hours.-—

An application has been received from

Mi-B. Jarden, the proprietor of the billiard room in .the Town Hall Building, , for an extension of hours. The By-law at present provides that all billiard; • rooms shall be closed at 10 p.m. and the" comiiiittee refers the matter to Council . without comment.

Cv. Patrick moved that the hour be ex : tended to 10.30.

Breach of Building By-Law. —Your Committee's attention was drawn to the departure by a bu*Vler from the specifications lodged with his application for a permit. The variation consisted of the use of wallboard, which is not.permitte^ for outside work under the By-law, in-stead-of; weather .boarding as specified, and tlie owner protested against the action of the Building laspector . in re-, quiring the wall]board to be removed. Your Committee has investigated the matter and is quite .satisfied 'that the Building Inspector's request is a reasonable one and has advised the owner r tliat the pj: : law must be obseryeoi and the specifications submitted with his application for the permit C adhered to.

Fire, Brigade Bepqrts.-r-The Fire Brigade^reports covering the-periods February 13th to March 13th and March 13th

to April 3rd, states that the Brigade has been called out" uk f?ni\ occasions during each period, gov\ v.-ork being M".3 on each occasion. Attendance at all musters has been good and all appliances are in good working order. The Brigade ack-

Sub-Stations. —Your Committee has given consideration to the question of the provision of sub-si aliens and while ji is not considered that the time is ripe for the erection of such stations it desires to call the attention of Council to the necessity of sectoring sites as soon as possible. It is suggested that two sub-stations will be required one In the northern part of the Borough and one in the southern portion.

Lining Engine Rooms.—The ti;mng of the ceilings of the engine rooms has not been carried out and the absence of such lining makes the social an&i living rooms upstairs very cold and draughty. The Building Inspector reports that the work could be carried out with matchlining for the sum of £58 and it is recommended that authority be given for the work to be done.
