THE MONTH OF VENUS

April, the present month, was sacred to Venus, who is said to have been sprung from the foam of the sea, and who was welcomed at Mount Olympus; the home of the gods as the goddess ofLoVe and Beauty. The Old English name for the month was Oster-monath, or Easfrer-monath, because it was the month sacred to Eastre or Oscara, the goddess of Spring. Although Easter is now a Christian festival, it was in the first place a feast held by the Saxons in honour of their goddess Eastre. The feast was held in the spring time and the people gave one another presents of coloured' eggs—symbolic of the beginning of life.
