DRINKING PARTIES AND SWEARING
ALLEGATIONS AGAINST
CRICKETERS
Drinking- and the use of bad language were among the allegations made against certain cricketers in a complaint received from the Waiwetu Golf Club by the Hut-t Park Committee at its meeting last week. Cricketers habitually encroached on the fairways, the club stated in its letter, and some of "the so-called games of cricket were nothing more than drinking parties." Bad language was used within the hearing of lady golfers,-the club added, and it hoped that something would be done about it.
The secretary of the Park Committee, Mr W. F. Sturman, said that -he had spoken to the caretaker about the complaint, and the caretaker had said that very little golf had been played during the cricket* season He had done his best
he added),'to -.guard against intemperance among_ those engaged in sports in the park, and he did not think -that very much of $_had taken place. It appeared^ that the complaints must have, come
through Sunday cricket.
Mr R. Toomath suggested that the caretaker should be instructed to do all that was in his power to prevent anything of. an objectionable-nature occurring in future. r
Members'of the committee were rather at a loss.to know whether the games played on Sunday were properly organised, or were more or less arranged beforehand, and for each pitch the Park Conxniitte'e received 15/-. There was not much golf played, he said, but there was a good demand for pitches. It was probable that the caretaker had tried to accommodate as many cricketers as possible. They might thus have been rather close to the fairways.
After a short discussion, in which the power of the committee to prosecute offenders was mentioned, the, meeting'decided on the motion of Mr E. Hogg, to refer the complaint to the caretaker for a detailed report. The report would then be considered by the chairman, Mr J. W. Longman, and the secretary, who would take what action seemed best.
