HUTT COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held on Monday night. There were present His Worship the Mayor (Sir Alex Roberts) and Councillors A. Mcßain, W. GL Meldrum, D. S. Patrick, J. R. Boyd, A. E. Carver, F. Campbell, J. Mitchell, A. Grierson, and A. J. Hobbs.

A telegram was received from the Mayor of Eastbourne asking the Council to accept grateful thanks- for assistance rendered by their Fire Brigade.

The Hutt Valley Horticultural .Society wrote.conveying the Society's appreciation of the action of the Reserves Department of the Borough Council in its efforts to promote a keener interest in our public reserves by making exhibits at the Society's show. . ,

The Mayor moved that the letter be

received.

Cr. Campbell seconded'. —Carried.

The Secretary of the" Council Employees Committee wrote extending an invitation to the Council to be present at their picnic on Saturday next.

An application was received from the Lower Hutt Municipal Silver Band for permission to use the Recreation Ground on April 21st for the purpose of holding

a gala.

Cr. Meldrum moved that permission for a ground be granted.

Cr. Carver seconded.: —Carried. '

The Town Clerk, Petone, wrote atatmg that a meeting had been convened of representatives of Local Bodies for the purpose of discussing "the necessary arrangements in connection with the provisions of an overhead bridge at the Railway Crossing at Petone in the vicinity of the Grand National Hotel, and asking that the Council appoint two delegates to represent it at such conference which will be held in the Petone Council Chambers on Wednesday.

Councillors Campbell and Boyd were appointed the Council's representatives.

The Worker's Educational Association wrote making application for the use of the Council Chamber as in previous years for Tuesday nights for the purpose of eohoiucting classes and expressing sincere thanks for the use x>f the room during the preceding session.

On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Hobbs the request was granted.

Cr. Meldaum moved that the resolution passed that the tender of Mr McKinley for the old Police House for £100 be rescinded. Cr. Meldrum said that when the matter came before the Council McKinley was allowed to re-erect in Alicetown. The building had been condemned and he strongly objected) to the building being shifted and re-erected in a residential area.

Cr. Grierson seconded pro forma and said he saw no objection to the sound timber being used.

Cr. Patrick was of the opinion that if the re'erection was made under strict supervision he could see no Teason why the objection should be raised.

Cr. Hobbs said the Council was quite protected by the Engineer and Inspector. He considered that some of the old timber is better than some of the timber going into the houses to-day.

The motion was then put and lost, Cr Meldrum being the only one in favour of it. . : '"-■•

Cr. Hobbs moved that the resolution passed at a previous meeting regarding the renaming of streets be rescinded.

The Mayor seconded. —Carried. - A petition signed by twenty-six ratepayers was presented to the Estates Committee requesting that Norton Park and back Waiwetu Road be included in the shopping area. As the matter had been rejected at a previous meeting it could not be brought up again until the expiration of six months, unless the motion was signed by five members of the Council.

It was decided to hold the matter over,

The Discharged Prisoners Aid Society wrote acknowledging receipt of Council's grant and conveying the 'Society's thanks for the donation.

The New Zealand Obstetrical Endowment Fund wrote applying for a grant by the Council towards the funds being raised for this object. .

The Mayor said it was a very worthy object and moved that a grant of £25. be made.

Cr. Mitchell seconded.—Carried.

Cr. Boyd said he had received several complaints about the structure on the town side of Melling bridge, the noise from which caused it to be a nuisance in the district.

The Mayor stated that enquiries would be made .with a view to having the matter remedied.

The Mayor said that a shop-owner had complained that on Friday night he gave the alarm of fire and estimated that five minutes elapsed before he eouldi get a connection through to the Fire Station. The Mayor pointed out the seriousness of any delay in such an urgent matter.

At Cr. Campbell's suggestion the eomplaintant is to be asked to lodge his complaint "to the Council in writing, so that the matter can be more effectively

dealt with at next meeting.

The Parks Committee has authorised the expenditure of £i 2 for the purchase of bulbs for planting in Riddifordi Park, an exceptionally. favourable offer having been received. The Mayor offered the Committee a large number of bulbs and Cr. Hobbs also donated 400 named variety daffodils. The donors werfl thanked for their generous donations which would be greatly appreciated.
