WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Our borough councillors should feel indebted to the members of the Hautana Square deputation who brought illuminating facts under tiieir nofice recently. Besides a leading barrister, who had been retained to 'defend the ca.se, which he did in a flood of .most eloquent oratory, there was also present a life-^tuderit of geometry who established a world's xecord by persuading a body of city fathers that "a'triangle is a square.".

Another speaker; made the astounding -assertion that properties in the Square would be depreciated by including them in the street. It therefoTe behoves the Borough Council to use the name "Square" wherever possible Li order that they may collect more' rates. It was not stated by, the speaker what relative value he woidd attach to t»le name Mansions, or even BoulevaTde. This is a matter that might form a subject for investigation by the By-laws Committee, and might possibly, lead to a considerable increase in the Borough's revenue. People are saying -that the residents of Hautana Square

j are objecting to their locality being designated '' street,'' but the residents of Hautana Street object to their locality being, designated "square." as there is a danger that Hautana Square wpll soon become cpmjnercaaKsedy a lucrative dairy industry being already established there.

Evidently the Borough Council will 2iave to follow the precedent of the

River Board and. rescind a motion passed at a previous meeting. It may -toe necessary for all local bodies in. future to fully advertise the fact before making any drastic changes. It is understood that several other protests will be lodged by residents who claim strong sentimental reasons why certain street names should be retained. Truly this is a democratic age! and goes to shoiw that the ratepayers take a much, greater interest in-Borough, affairs than is sometimes imagined.
