That Great inventive genius has beeii displayed by Dick Mower, of Lower Hutt, a school boy of 15 years, who has succeeded in making a ihydroeycle with which he has had several trips on the Hutt River. Seeing a picture of this invention thrown on fee screen at
the pictures one evening, he immediately set about making this curious invention for himself.. It consists of two canvas punts upon which is mounted a bicycle frame and by pedolling in the ordinary way the craft is driven over t»he water by the' action of^ the propellor located between the'two canvas punts. During tne Christmas holidays he gave several demonstrations on the Hutt River, greatly to the joy of his friends, and had the weat»her been more favourable it was his intention to sail it'~at Petone during the Carnival.
Referring to our enquiry in t&e leader of last week^s issue as to the origin of the name Laings Road, we have been informed by several of the oKlest inhabitants of the district, that Laings Road was undoubtedly named after one Peter Laing, who owned the Bloomfield Estate and lived where Bellevue Crescent now stands. Mr Laing, wiho was a baker and confectioner, was a leading business man ,of Wellington and had a shop on Lambton Quay. He was known to everyone for his kindly disposition'and was a particular favourite of the school children to whom 'he distributed any surplus confectionery he had in stock, as it was Ms proud boast that he never sold stale §akes. His grave may be seen in the Sydney Street Cemetery, close to the western entrance. Reference to the damage of the Club's training shed at Hutt Park was made at last night's annual general meeting of the Hutt Valley Harriers. Irresponsible people who use the stream for bathing purposes are no doubt to blame for ! the forced entrance to the shed followed by a gang of larrikins _ jvho have made it their pleasure-to rob the pictures^ tear up the floor boards. "How people can indulge in this practice is beyond my contention,' 7 remarked one member "and I am pleased to see that the police have the matter in hand and' _ will deal with future offenders. 7J-
At the last meeting of the River Board members complained of the nui-
sance caused by - noisy motor cycles passing down the street when the meeting was in progress^ The attention of the Borougia inspector will be drawn to the matter.
