GARDEN PARTIES.

,The promoters of the garden party in aid of St.; Stephen 's Church, were rewarded -with a beautiful day '. on Saturday. Mr. D. S. Patrick very kindly lent-Ms grbtinds for the occasion. The beautiful trees, vivid • Ja^rns, and gay flower-beds. presented- a beautiful scene, and particularly^ao^iTed^was a bed of gorgeous multi-colonred hydrangeas. . -: ~ About three hundred guests were present and their entertainment was amply ! foi\ In the back, the gentlemen were indefatigable in the running of j they varidus competitions, such as ",Sally-o," nail-d-riving, darts, skitrtles, etc;, etc.', -whilst in front the' ladies had various- stalls, Mrs Shearer being in charge of t-he cake stall, Mrs A, Marshall and Mrs J. T.\ Nichols of the flower-stall, Mrs Ferguson of the produce, Mrs.Jensdn of the novelty, whilst Mrs Carine, with Mrs H. S. Barren, officiated at the ever popular ice-cream depot. Many other ladies assised Miss Allen in the dispensing of afternoon tea w&ieh-was served on the verandah, and in a room opening off it. A very novel, and, to. the little folk, "thrilling," entertainment, was offered in the form of pony, rides. It was very entertaining to see White "Ddbbin'' set off on his

pilgrimage round! the orchard with his freight of pefrhaps,, two, but accompanied by a retinue of round-eyed admirer&; all of tins for sixpence! Tennis was also enjoyed by the young folk so that everyone spent a most_ enjoy-' able afternoon. ..;',.

Mr and Mrs Harold Johnston, Irowry Bay, gave a delightful garden party on Saturday, for the friends and supporters

who so loyally supported Mr. Johnston, in the late political, campaign.. It was particularly pleasant. "There were games, tennis and putting,' and a for-tune-teller was visited'; by many, but people generally preferred to wander from Mr and Mrs Harold' Johnston.'s picturesque garden,to Lady Bell's adjoining^ and the long •herbaceous borders, small beds in. the turf, , back ground of bush and English trees, with the view of the sea in front, made the prettiest scene imaginable, Mrs -Johnston wore a,frock of figured rose, and' black chiffon.
