LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held on-Monday evening. Present: Mayor (Sir Alex Roberts), and Councillors A.. J. Hobbs, A. Grierson, J. Mitchell, F. Campbell, A. E. Carver, D. S. Patrick, W. G. Meldruon and Boyd. '.;'.';.

An apology was received from Cr. Mc-

Bain.

The Public Works Department Avrote

declaring as.a main highway the approaches' to the •new bridge in lieu of Riverbank Street and the approaches to the old bridgev—^Agreed to. The Mayor of Wellington wrote asking if the Lower Hutt Council was agreeable to join in with the City,in extending a civic reception to the new Governor. , It was decided to -'agree to the wishes of the City Council. It/was decided to grant tEe use of the Recreation Ground on 14th March to the Primary Schools for a sports meeting- , Tenders were called for the demolition and removal of the old Police house and the building known as Dudding's. The price for the Police house was £27, and j Du-dding's £3/10/-. A further offer of £100 was received for the right to re-erect the building in Alicetown. . Cr Meldrum objected to the old building being re-erected in any part of the borough. - .It was decided to .refer the matter to the Inspector for a report on the condition of the building and the matter be further considered at next meeting. , In dealing with Feist 's Block it was decidied, to .instruct the engineer to prepare a rough plan, of what area will be ) required far a Town Hall office, and also , showing what land can •be disposed of by sale or lease. GEAR ISLAND, Cr. Patrick raised the point -of the Hutt River Board having turned down the Aero Club, application for a; lease of Gearlsland. He moved: ".That in view J of the Tapid developments of aviation

and the necessity of establishing au aerodrome for the Valley in the near future, .the Kiver Board be asked to re-consider its decision." "I refer to the decision of the Hutt River Board at its last meeting, to-deny the Aero Club the partial use of Gear Island," said Councillor Patrick. "I am at a loss to understand the reason fox so hasty an action in the face of the cold facts as I believe them to obtain. I understand the reasons to*be (a) that Gear Island is required as. an open space; (b) that aeroplanes there will cause, a nuisance by their noise; and (c) that the public will experience danger f ro^n 'planes which may fall - foy accident. I submit that.with the Hutt Park practically contiguous, reason (a); falls, and if a large open space is required, and it doubtless is, it is required* far more in the more northern area, Where it -will be of greater benefit. N"oise is .relative; and those near will very shortly fail to hear, or notice, the noise of 'planes. The danger (c) is negligible. _ Gear,; Island. is peculiarly, well . suited i;if or such a purpose, since wind conditions are ideal; the hills are not too close, and bot'li sea and land 'planes can utilise it. It is the only suitaible spot within easy reach of Wellington, safe for training pilots—(which. Rdngotai and Trenth'am are not—and if so used will bring prosperity in the way of trade and create trade for the wihoie valley as -the time goes om Again, it would appear tiat apart from the benefit desriveti "by the ratepayers in respect to the filling 7 and levelling the club proposes to do, the River Board, if their stated "intentions * are carried out, will lose over £800 in revenue in ten years, or nearly £100 per year, by turning the Aero Clujb out."

Cr. Hobbs said he approved of what the Hutt River Board had; done. He thought they-.should be careful before they criticised another local body. A public meeting should be called if the ratepayers wisheoi to object.

Cr. Grierson seconded tlie. motion, and stated .he considered the Hutt River Board had not given the matter full consideration^

Cr. Campbell said he was inf. favour of the Aero Club getting a lease.

Cr. Boyd said the establishment of an Aero Club wquld be of great benefit to the district.

Cr. Meldfunr supported the Hutt River Board's action in turning the Club down. What the.Council should try to get removed was the Casing Works with its wretched smell.-

The Mayor stated he Avould like to see the River Board re-consider the whold

question,

The motion was put and carried Crs. Meldrum and Hobbs dissenting.
