CORRESPONDENCE.

THE UNEMPLOYED PROBLEM (To t&eL Editor). .Sir,- —With, reference to your footnote at the end. of my letter in last week's "Hutt News" I would like to ■point cut that I disagree with, you when you say that the unemployment problem should not be sufficiently acute at this time of the year to call for any extraordinary measures. On the contrary I maintain it is imperative t&at it should be dealt with immedately and not wait until the winter months when owing to the bad weather it is difficult to earn a full week's wages. As one who has been employed on relief work owing to bad times in our midst which, affects every section of tihe community, I am well acquainted | with, the, true position in the borough and I will guarantee to say that if the Council requested those but of employ•»'■ ment to register at the Council Office the true position would then be revealed and my statement would be verified. \ I quite agree with, you wjhen you say that the Borough Council has no jurisdiction* over it's as it .wojedd, I believe, effect the-liberty of the subject which, in the annals of the law, is supposed to be sacred, but w&at 1 strongly object to is the manager of the pictures engaging such, employees knowing that they are employed during the day time and also that there is so much, unemployment in the" district. Surely those out of employment and married oug>ht to be given the preference. .You inquire if I had any objection to a member of the Council staff being a member of the volunteer fire brigade. Certainly not, provided such borough, employee is in. a' position to give his services and .Ms (household dofes not suffer as a result: (no doubt wifey will see to this) but, of course

if a man is^ married with perhaps a small family and wants every penny in order to be able to make ends meet, he cannot be expected to give such services. Incidentally,-1 might mention that I have given my seTvieep an connection wth t»he Hutt Gala on more than one occason for the good of the cause but I should not be able to do so if I was in the ranks of the married, men.—l am etc> . LIVE AND LET LIVE.
