'.'The bankrupt is now in custody at New Plymout.li/' remarked the Official Assignee (Mr S. Tansley) last week, presiding at a largely-attended meeting of the creditoTs of John Albert Bitters, founder, Lower fiutt, Mr. Tansley stated thatjhe debtor had failed to attend the first meeting of his creditors held on sth December, and, though, he had filled up a certain amount of his bankruptcy statement, there was realiy nothing in it. The creditors at that meeting had resolved that the bankrupt should be arrested, if found, and one of , the creditors, happening to have seen hint in New Plymouth, he (the Official Assignee) . had iiad. him arrested and, held there. It appeared that Bitters had been ruaining fa. cabaret in New Plymouth, undeT the name of Stafford ', and there were'chairs, tables, and musical instruments in the place; but he was not certain to "whom they be^' longed. In the bankrupt's statement the amount owing to secured creditors was. put down as £1700, and the value of the security at £3000, leaving a surplus of £1700; and 2us book debts were "estimated to produce £1608, but the amounts owing to unsecured creditors were not given.
A solicitor representing Mrs Bitters (at present with her baby in a maternity tospital) stated iiiat t!iere was a maintenance order for his wife and children out against Bitters.
After some clisciission,.;_ the meeting was adjourned till 10 a.m to-morrow, 31&t January, .Mr Tansley saying that h© would have the bankrupt brought down to Wellington in custody.
