SOIL AND POTTING.

The Fuchsia likes a good rich soil for its roots, and may be grown into quitea large size in one season, but to do j this successfully, frequent potting, or, say, three or four shifts during spring and early summer, are necessary, as the ' plants will not.-put up with large sliifts. For young plants in a small stage we pxefer a mixture of three parts fibrous

loam, broken up^ small, one part leaf.'mould,- and .."a liberal addition of saird or road grit in about a' proportion of one-sixth of the bulk. For later shifts use two parts iibrous loam in a :f airly [ lumpy .state, one part leaf-jtiould; and one part decayed jcow manure; add* sand as before, and about one quart of bonemeal to (Bach-bushel of the mixture; or, if one of the many concentrated manures on the market is preferred,,use it in the proportion advised by the ,ven-. dors in lieu of the bone-mealj Drain" the pots well, and. be sure that fcheyare. both clean and dryv Pot with' moderate" ■- firmness. Qld cut-back plants should,>have some of the,old soil shaken .away when the.-young shoots have grown about, an inch long, and be. repotted in pots one or two sizes srnairer than those -j^iey .occupied' previously, and when t-hese jare filled with new • roots "repot again into a larger size.
