"BURNS NIGHT"
Our Monarch's kinmost year but yin
Had five and twenty days begun
When a cold blast of Januar* wind

Members of the above Society celebrated Jhe. birthday of, Scotland '&. .National Bard on Saturday, 25tfi^January in the Oddfellows 7 HaU, Pe^one. Th» gathering numbered about one.hun^reoj and thirty and was carried out in a way befitting the memory of the : Immortal Bard. w The guests took their places at the tables while the Hutt Valley Pipe JBand gave a fitting selection., Whent sea^ ed the "haggis" was played in, in tru.4 and/ancient fashion. Led by the DruiiiMaj^r, the Haggis was carried in a^di placed before the Chief io the skirl of the pipes- When it was placed, th^e Chief rendered the Poet's address to the "Haggis r' followed by his short and< pithy grace before r^V^^ft^Y which the assembled guests diaiSTjustiee in a fashion that woulw have delighted the Natii6nal Bard could he have been there.
Present at thefunetion were representatives of various lundred bodies,;one of our local councillors, and, Mr Nash7 bur member in the House of Representatives. The usual toasts were made and answered in a manner befitting the occasioni One very marked feature -was the •reply made /by Mi Nash, to the toast to ' 'The-rHouse' of Representatives.' ' He dealt with his subject in a masterly way • surprising all present by the knowledge he had of Robert Burns, not only as a poet, but as^a man: In due cotfrse the tables -were^cleared and then as liord Bryon so graphically pu\it:-; — ;

Of course everything comes to an end, iud at the watching hour of midnight, the strains of "Auld Lang Syne" brought to a close an evening that will
