BOWLING.
HUTT VALrLEY TOURNAMENT,
AVON BY NEWTOWN" RnSTK.
Postponed on several occasions on account of bad weather, tie- final games in the Hutt Valley 's New Year-rink tournament were-played on the Petqne Club's green in perfect weather on Saturday afternoon. Owing to the rain which.' fell the evening before, there was just a nice little grip on the green, but there was plenty of draw and tie turf was in good order. The resists .of the games were as follows:— . | . .Semi-final. . ' Newtown-—Webster, Davis, Bobbins, Levestam (,s) 25; Wellington—Dalrympie, Thonison, Hood, Duncan (s) 15. •Frail.-' Newtown—Webster, Davis, Epbbins, Lewerstam (s) 24; Central—Dunderdaie, Eadcliffe, Nicholson, FisheT (s) 21. In the semi-final game there was rio questioning the .result when. , viewed from 'halfway, tie card showing 12—3 inTNewtown's favour. Leverstam and
his very sound rink simply outplayed the Wellington bowlers all through by superior drawing and placing. Wellington only scored, on eight of t&e twenty one heads. vAfter the nineteenth head t>he score was 25 —9.
The final game . was more stoutly fought. With ,the score 9—l in Newtown's favour after the fourth head, it looked very much as though, the game was going to be anobher runaway victory, but Fisher and'his men stuck jbo their gims, and, scored on six of the following eight heads, ending the break with fouT shots, due to a trail-of the jack by, Fisher. Tiis made the score 13—12• (Newt-own up). On. the next head Np"^r town snu'gglod all round the
jack and lay four,, which Fisher failed to'shift. Newtown bagged another two on the next head, and again it seemed that Central was "down by the head and sinking,-' but with two on the fifteenth and a lucky six the score became 20 all with four heads to go. The six was due to a drive ,by Levestam, who wished to shift Central's two shots or burn the head, but instead of doing that he cleared his own woods out and left only enemy bowls round the jack. This was sensational! Newtowit however, was not to,be denied. Each man drew in close with, deadly monotony, and though a couple of /heads
were burnt in the effort to win, Newtown notched singles on the eighteenth, and nineteenth, heads and two on the twentieth. Fisher and Nicholson tried hard to secure another chance, but only scored a single shot on the last head. It was a game full of incident ..and good to watch, but on form Newtown Js win was deserved.
This is the second occasion' on which, a Newtown rink skipped by Levestam has won this tournament. They came through to win in 1928 j a Thorndon rink, (skipped by Goodwin) won last year; and now Levestam scores again.
At the conclusion of the game Mr W. Pawson (a member of the Wellington Centre),, after apologising for tie. absence of the president of the centre (Mr H. Mayer), congratulated the winners on their well-earned vjctory.lt was not the ending he bad hoped to see —(laughter) -r- but nevertheless Mr Levestam and his merry men were to -be congratulated- on winning tie tournament a second time. The game had resembled the New York Stock Exchange in that it was full of fluctuations, and in a like measure it had kept the- whole of Wall Street (the bank) excited. They were pleased to.
see how well the tournament was su<pported^by the city clubs.' They had entered nine rinks. He hoped it would be eighteen next year. '
3ji conclusion Mr. Pawson called for cheers for the winn-ers and runners-up. .
