VANDALISM.
During the Christmas holidays a particularly bad example of hooliganism was perpetrated at the football gymnasium in Strand Park. It is difficult the mentality of any decent New, Zealander who could be so degraded as to- commit such acts of wilful destruction on a building that has been erected for the purpose of providing amusement and athletic training to the young men of oivr district.
After forcing their entrance through a back door the ruffians set about doing the most insane ■ acts of destruction it is possible to imagine that any but the most acute lunatic or moral degenerate would dare to perform. Many 6f the. electric switches and the meter board were smashed, the lavatory pan was broken evidently wit-b. a hammer, and the lead pipe giving the water connection from the cistern was wrepched down and stolen, Finding the committee room locked, the door was forced open when they set to work to destroy the '*pianp.. This they effectively dxU,by smashing in the front and breaking the hammers and wiring in such a ruthless- manner that the instrument is now absolutely worthless..
T-he police have now got the matter, in hand and it is hoped that the culprits will soon be arrested and that an example will be made of them.
