The Hutt News THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 1930 HUTT RIVER BOARD.

WHO'S WHO.

The triennial election of five members for the Hutt River Board, >o be held next Tuesday, is causing an unusual amount of interest owing to the number of candidates offering." The' lack of interest in the past and the lack of aspirants for municipal honours, has made it unnecessary to hold a general election since 1921, although a by-elec-tion • was held in March 1928 when 'Messrs F. S. Hewer and H. E. Leighton wer^e the competing - candidates. Mr. W. T.\ Strand, who has held" t?ie position '. of chairman to the ~ Board since 1921 is not offering himself '"or re-election. •, < In addition-to the four sitting members who are again offering their ser-. vices, are seven candidates, three cf whom, we .understand, have been, put forward by district associations. Messrs Barnes arid Hooper are ;u----dependont -nominees, residing \n Taita/ and are the. owners of valuable farm lands on the'hanks-, of the Hutt Riv-?r.

.M r A. J. Nieholls, a superannuated ,civil servant,. and a comparatively • £?•

fjent resident} lives* in tlie Waiivetu district aiitl-is\tiie. oriorgetie secretri/y. of tl¥e HuM Valley Horticultural Society.*' ' . .'■■>-' • ' ' .

. Mr.,-V..-i A. Noble resides in Petoiie and is a member of 't3ie;'Borough Cotiii?M in that town.

Mr. Edward Sheil isa very old rcnilent of the Hult and carries on the business of-taxi proprietor.

Mr H. ~E. Leighton, also a resident of many years standing is che ownerof considerable-property in the borough-

ajnd is the founder of the widely known firm of land and estate agents which bears his name. Mt Leigh/ton was for several years a member of ciia Lower Hutt Borough* Council and a.t the present time occupies the position of borough assessor. His experience of local body work, combined with his extensive business knowledge should make him an estimable representative on the Board.

Mt Gr. A. Chapman is, like the .previous gentleman, too well known to require any introduction, having lived in the Hutt fo*^42 years. -■ Being retired from, active business Jie has from time to time given, very generously of his best to the service of the district, and if he is returnedl as a "member ~.f the River Board, we have little Jear that he will display' the same amount of energy and business acumenV t-iiat has been rendered by him on many occasions whfci: his services have ; been sought to assists some worthy object in" out district. , •■ . _. The sitting members seeking re-elec-tion, are:— Mr John, Mitchell, a member of- the finance i'-ominittee, a director of Messrs Laery and; Co.-, Wellington—h&s served on _ ''Me Board since 1921 and. is also a .valuable member of the Lower Hutt Borough Council.' Mr F. S. Hewer, a menv ber of: the plantation eommittec, is .a highly respected resident. of Taita, where he is qh gaged in faTming pursuits. Although Mr Hewer has onlyserved on the Board for a 7ear and nine months, he Has^ during ..hat time rendered remarkable service and proved himself to be a mosiJ valuable acquisition. Mt C. G-ostelow, who has served, three years on—bhc Board, is tie chief Government Actuary, for New Zealand, and has been of •"immense- value as a member of the finance committee. Mr W. H. Smith-has served, six years on the Board and -has rendered valuable service as a member of the -daniation committee an J has been responsible for the introduction of the commercial or ozier willow plantationa now covering many acres of waste land_in the river bed. During his 8i years residence^in ."th'3 Hutt he has always taken an active interest inanything making for the bet-

terment of tne district and has been associated witih many committees. For three years lie was secretary of the Hutt~ VaUey Horticultural Society which position he relinquished to take up the position of editor, of ;he "Hutt News" ffj'wihich/.paper he was the founder in 1927.

In view of the fact ttat such a number of candidates axe offering, it is to be 1 oped that the ratepayers will give

more attention to the election than in the past and select representatives to this important body who can be relied upon to work without fear <>r favour for the district as a whole

The ratepayers have been well and fauitfullj served by the members of the retiring board and under their eaoab'c aomJristration, the work of rivor proter/Joa and land accretion, all done out cP rt\enue, has .established the Hutt IJ.;vv>r Board as probably the most su"x;bs.',iul and financial of any local body- i.« Xew Zealand. It ;Vs to bo h -peel that this fact will not oe overlooked by the ratepayers on polling dav&i.'l that a majority of-"i&ose who a*. 1 st-ffifieiitly public-spirited to again oifor thtneselves for election will ha 7a a.i oppovi urity of continuing their good work.' Pvller details of the Board's

•ptjifitlons will be found/in a statement f~oiu the board members elsewhere in this issue. ;

..'•■..'li iau&t be borne in .mind that it is oi-.ly ratepayers! to tie River , Boar:! who are eligible to .vole find that .r.o.pi\i\.".cicn is made for absentee-s to ree.n-d 'heir votes. The piling bu:<rs are from ;> a.m to 6 p,m—nnfc 9 fco 7 "as in oiJK!" elections. . ■-'•.-..
