CHAMPIONSHIP TENNIS

MISS NICHOLLS WINS LADIES'

SINGLES

FINAL GAME^ PLAYED IN IDEAL WEATHER.

The North Island Lawn Tennis Championship. Tournament was concluded yestei'day ■on the Wanganui Club courts in ideal weather. The courts were on the heavy side in. the -morning, but dried for- the finals in the~ afternoon. A large gallery 'of spectators saw a fine match for the final of the men's singles but a very one-sided display in the ladies' singles final. The, courts have stood up to the.heavy play wonderfully. The finals of the ladies' singles between Mrs R. P. Adams and Miss D. Nieholls which

the latter won.6 —3, 6—-2,. was a disappointing display, but the fault did not lie with Miss Nieholls. Mrs Adams playing but little better than she did in the morning in the mixed doubles, was but a shadow of her game in the semi-final against Miss Myers. Miss Nieholls did not play so well as against Mrs Melody, nor was there any need to. The stinging forehand drives that defeated Mrs

Melody were lacking, although the length and placement were there. Miss Nicholls concentrated on Mrs Adams's backhand. This stood the attack fairly well, the ball going back quietly and generally^ deep, but sooner or later Mies Nicholls would oirive the opposite corner. Mrs Adams all too frequently netted. V

Miss Nicholls 'backhand was more 'reliable. The game was^ played entire* ly from the backline. Mrs Adams lacked her usual speed over the court, letting go balls that ordinarily she would have, had no difficulty in getting-to. The score was quite an accurate indication of the. game, and at no stage did Mrs Adams appear to determine or make a bid for it. The only real variety was when Miss Nicholls drew Mrs Adams in short and then drove past her down the side line. It was indeed a disappointing final to those who expecteoj a close game based on the standard of play in the semifinals. ■■'*■

Miss Duleie Nieholls is a player of great-ability, and -in annexing "the Ladies ' Singles Championship has added another laurel to her already long list of successes. She is a daughter of Mrs and the late Mr S, ificholls, andi Petone is proud and honoured that another of her daughters has been so successful in the field of sport.. .. : . '
