The friends of Miss Ailsa JSicol, of Belmont, will be interested to learn that she has been very successful at the recent L.A.B Examination!, for which she entered in Ohristehurch, She was engaged by the Harmonic Society to take the; part of ".Ginlietta" in "Tales of Hoffmann'» at the Society's recent" concert. * She has since taken the same part and . also *" the r chief so-' prano parts in the "Pagoda of Elowers-" and a _ scene from SehuT^ert Js Birth-place, which was staged at the opening of the new Radiant ; Theatre, ar> i her acting and singing met with great approbation from 'her audiences. After a performance to be given 'at Ashburton next Tuesday, Miss Nieol will "return to Wellington, having been absent three^ months^ — '
A local resident remarked recently that Christmas was not Christmas without the rendering1 of Handel's immortal composition "The Messiah." Ho went on to relate how many yeara ago he walked miles to a large city hall only to find it packed frours before . and crowds in the street glad to stand and listen. This, gf course, reminided the writer tiiat the Methodist Church Choir will, again render this oratorio. The date fixed is Sunday, December 15th. The choir will be augmented for the purpose and an orchestra of 18 instruments will assist.,
Those who were jsrlvileged to hear this Choir's rendering of ltTbe Holy City" recently will certainly anticipate another musical treat and it is quite certain that only the early comers will get a seat. The assistance" of singers acquainted with 'The Messiah' will be welcomed by the conductor, Mr. Ernest D&wson. The residents of the Hutt are^. no doubt grateful that Christmas is ikot.. allowed, to pass without th;e production of' the oratorio "The MessiahV' ■'_•'-
The mercery and clotting business earrifed on by Mr. Bramwell in- Main Street has been taken over by Mr. W. A. Brown and will be carried on under his personal' supervision. A large and up-to-date stbek is oflFered for the public's inspection and\ the prices •will be found to compare favourably with city prices. \
