TENNIS NOTES.
A large gathering of tennis "enthusiasts attended the first ofiicial opening of the Lower Hutt Tennis Club's new courts in Totarra "Crescent; on Saturday afternoon--last. NnXmeroTis visitors were present, including Sir Alexander -and Lady: Roberts, the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Messrs E. P. Bunny, G-. N\ Gbldie and G-. H, Chapman and many oi/heTs. - Proceedings were opened by the Club president (Mr. Ijfc P. Bunny), who in- | troduced t&e Mayor, Sir Alexander Eoberts, and thanked the Lower Hutt Borough Council for the* valuable assist ance given by that body in the founation of the courts.
Sit Alexander Roberts in the course of-his speech thanked'all those whose efforts were responsible, for the forme-* tion of the <;lub and particularly the Government for sanctioning the use Of the. Reserve for tennis purposes, those officials who supported the movement, Mr. CX H: C&apman fot the wonderful work that he had done in supervising the laying <lown of the courts, the debenture holders who had given their financial assistance, and t>he club's com mittee whose original' efforts were re-" sponsible for the formation of the club.
A general tesume of tire club's operations was then given. The membershirp now totals 150 and it "was pointed put that people who were desirous of joining the club should do so at once as the time was, approaching, when
there would .be difficulty in obtainingadmission. . , The courts were then declared open and His_, Worship called upon Messrs Don France, Len IVance, H. Wilsonand C. Malf roy, who had kindly consented to play an ex&ibition match of three sets. The numerous ■• spectators were treated to a great exhibition of the game as it should be played, Dxm Franc and Malfroy defeating their op-" ponents by 5— 7, 6—l ; 6—^3. : • X very nice afternoon, tea was- then sprved ijy the liadies' 'Committee and \ the eouTts were oeeupi©d tuitil late in, tlie^ evening by visitors and members playing friendly -matches - It was very pleading to s(ee our Mayor weijdurg tn© 'racquet in a set which included Messrs Wilspn and Mai-
froy, it is hoped that this will be the forerunner of many further visits from' the club's distinguished friend.
Tie four new grass courts which have juat been compleed played wonderfully well and -will be a boon to players during the summer months. , » -
