PADDY'S MARKET

A very successful result was achieved at the above affair on Saturday, November 9th, the takings approximating £30. Tsie draw for the oil 'painting which was raffled also took place, the winner being Miss N"eta Pukutapu, whose family aTe old residents of Waiwhetu. The result was seen to be popular with all.

The committee are deeply indebted to the shopkeepers of. Lower Hutt and Whites Line; also Wellington, for their gifts, and they sometimes wonder if more appreciation could be shown by various bodies and committees who1 are so generously helped by those same shopkeepers, by obtaining their supplies whenever the necessary articles can-be had, from these same kindly disposed people. An exhibition of the work of scholars was greatly admired, one is surprised at the finish which very small children can be taught, to put on handwork. The older girls made cakes for competition, wMeh after judging sold readily. The competition for articles made from sixpenny-worth of materials was very disappointing, the number competing being only equal to the number of prizes given. The committee hoped that so many articles would be made that a sum would be realised for the benefit of the school by the sale of same, Evidently there was some misunderstanding on the matter, but a clearer- idea may obtain for the next sale of work. Thanks- are also due to the ladies of the neighbourhood who ■gave-eakes for sale and for afternoon tea. The funds are to be used for the beau-tification of the Waiwhetu School grounds, which it is. Sloped to' make eventually a pleasurable spot for the grown-ups, as well as the children. There five acres which, when\the surrounding district is built on, will be a -valuable asset to the • Waiwhetu' residents, as the, only available play space
