LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held on Tuesday 'evening. Present :-^-The Mayor (Sir. Alex Roberts), Councillors A. J. Hobbs, A. Grieson, J. Mitchell, F. Campbell, A, E. Carver, J. K. Boyd, D. S. Patrick, W, G. Moklum and A. Mcßain.

The Hutt Volunteer Fixe Brigade wrote, irivitng tie members of the Council to, attend • its 24th annual rebunion to be hofd on Thursday, iSTovember 7th* at 8 p.m. . .

The Mayor hoped' that as , many as possible would be there as the Brigade rendered excellent service to the borough. . . . : -

The Wellington City Council wrote asking if the Council is in a position to. reply to previous letters with reference to tie' taking over of the new' road"being eoristrue-tcd fi'Om Park Road intersection to the Day's Bay road.

The Mayor nioved that the Council agree to take over the new road, provided that...the. City Council put Park Road in .propeT''order before Weing handed back. • . ;

Cr. Patrick seconded the motion, which was carried.

The Mayor moved that the road be taken over provided the Public Works agree to form footpaths when called upon to do so. Cr. Mcßain seconded*. Carried.

The Prime Minister wrote asking the Council to. hold a service on Armistice Day, ISTovember llt-h.

The Mayor moved that steps be taken to observe the day as suggested by the Prime Minister. •"-''■

In reply to a question by Or. Meldrum the engineer;stated that the fence erected at Mr. Bunny's residence cost £186/10/-, and Mr. Bunny gave the.land free. ' . : ; ■

Finance and Estates Comotttee. The Finance and Estates Committee reported as follows: —: ■" :

Painting, deist's Builditfg.—As lireet ed by Council this matter -has received the attention of the Committee and tenders were obtained foT carrying out the work. Your Committee has to recommend that the tender of Mr. F. J. Triplow, of £76/5/- be accepted. This price includes the painting of the roof. The borough engineer points out chat certain,, miuor repairs, to the building will be necessary before any painting work can, be done. T>hese are estimated at £25 and your Committee recommends that the repairs be^ also 'autlioriseil.

Public Conveniences—The Borough I Engineer reported the removal of another penny in the slot lock from the conveniences, at the new bridge, this' beingj the second lock to have been wrenched, from its 'fastenings. Old Bridge—The borough engineer reported that in' compliance with, the Council 's instruction he had made a fairly" close examination of the above structure, and -had also obtained an independent report from ' Mt. George Sykes, a timber bridge contractor of some standing: . Considered collectively, the condition of the various parts of the bridge renders it unsafe for even light traffic,, and Council is faced with replacing practically the whole of the timber work, above the piers if repairs were decided upon.
