When the Riddiford Baths opened at •y3 o'clock on Saturday morning there were a good number of hardy bathers waiting for admission, although there ■was almost a nip of frost in the air.
The parishioners of St. James's will tender to Mr and Mrs. Heseltine, a brief farewell social in St. James's Hall on Sunday evening next. The members of the executive of the Anglican Boys Home will also be present.
At the last meeting of the Hutt Horticultural Society, the President (Mr. D. S. Patrick), congratulated Mr; H. Pdole on his winning the British Raisers' Cup for Narcissi at the recent Christchurch Show. The -handsome

sented to the National Daffodil Society ;of New Zealand by prominent British growers, to be competed for annually, alternately in the NoTtlt and South Islands of New Zealand, the winner hold- ; ing it for the year with a replica of same for all time. The (trophy, which is of solid gold, is on view: in the window of Mr. Stevenson's, jeweller, i Main Street.
A pleasant social evening of 9t. Stephen's Church Choir and friends was -held at the Manse on Thursday
evening last. In . the year just past
considerable effort has been made to further the aims of the choir, and during the evening the opportunity was taken of thanking Mr. James Fordie, the conductor, for his able leadership and <hard work in this direction. In recognition of this, a small presentation was made to Mr. Pordie for which he feelingly thanked the choir. ..

The card parties arranged by the Hutt Municipal Band have been concluded for the present season. All patrons are thanked for their loyal support.
Mr. X F. Mainland -has been appointed assistant borough, engineer.^ Mr. Mainland is at present filling the position of Borough Engineer at Te Kuiti and has had considerable experience in similar works to those in progress and contemplated in the borough. He should be a decided acquisition to the engineering staff. In continuation of the Council's policy of accepting cadets for the engineering prof ession, Messrs G-. P. Hogg and Bobert Martin were duly appointed to eadetships at last Borougih Council meeting. ' A new Bus Time-table for the whole of the Hutt .Valley is now available from all bus drivers and will come into opeiation on Monday next, 21st inst.
